The Longest Mock Draft in NFL History Continues...
The mock draft has reached 3,746 words.
I’ve done no research to back this up, but I’m pretty sure I’m on pace to set some sort of record. I fully expect the Guinness people to be calling soon.
For those of you interested in my recovery from the Patriots’ loss in the Super Bowl, I’ve finally reached the first stage: denial. I’ve decided that the Super Bowl ended with Randy Moss’ touchdown. I will not be convinced otherwise.
One thing about the Patriots’ season this year—it became us-against-the-world the minute the Jets turned them in for videotaping their sidelines in the first quarter of the first game.
Not to get into a Spygate related debate, but a couple of quick thoughts on the subject before I get to the pick:
1) Eric Mangini is a rat. An overstuffed, underwhelming rat. He will go down in history as the guy who turned Belichick into the NFL.
I guess that’s better than going down as the guy who got fired after three unproductive seasons as the Jets' head coach.
2) Mangini knew about the Patriots’ taping procedures because he participated in them. He turned in the Patriots because he was irked that the Pats kicked his video guy out of Gillette Stadium last season.
You do have to wonder if he would have turned in Belichick if he knew what kind of a mess it was going to make.
3) If Congress gets involved with Spygate, I might be pushed completely over the edge. I’m shaky on whether they belong in the steroids business, but at least there’s a legit public health concern there.
How about this? Congress is allowed to investigate Spygate as soon as the Iraq war is over, the economy is fixed, the immigration issue is dealt with, my taxes are reduced, and the US dollar is worth more than the Canadian dollar again
Can we fix these issues first?...Please?
Any why does nobody care that Specter pretty much came out and admitted that he was only interested in Spygate because he was an Eagles fan? Apparently integrity only matters when it helps the team you root for.
4) The thing that pisses me off the most is that the Patriots are being singled out here. Why aren’t we talking about taking Super Bowl rings away from the Cowboys since Jimmy Johnson admitted to doing the same thing? Why aren’t we talking about taking Super Bowl rings away from the Broncos for cheating on the salary cap? Why aren’t we talking about taking Super Bowl rings away from the Steelers for introducing steroids to professional sports?
Here’s an idea: Let's interview old-school players like Bubba Smith and ask them about team officials sneaking into opposing team’s practices to steal entire gameplans.
When we're done, nobody will have a Super Bowl ring except the '72 Dolphins!
Sorry, had to vent.
If the board falls the way I’ve predicted so far, there’s no doubt that the Jets will look to move out of the sixth pick. I’m sure the Cowboys will be calling and the Jets will be extremely eager to listen.
If they don’t move out of this pick, the prospects of improving what was a pathetic offense last season will be too tough to pass up.
As much as I would love to watch McFadden continue to fall...
The Pick: Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas
There’s something to be said for taking the best player available, and Darren McFadden might be the best player in the draft.
The Jets were, to put it kindly, weak offensively last season.
Their starting RB last season, Thomas Jones, averaged only 3.6 yards per carry and managed only one rushing touchdown all season.
Jones is quickly approaching 30, and if last year is any indication 30 is hitting him like a mack truck.
Leon Washington is a great weapon off the bench, especially in third down situations. He compliments McFadden tremendously, and moving forward they could become a fantastic tandem.
As for the 2008 season, I’m sure the Jets' coaching staff would be happy to see McFadden and Jones splitting time on first and second down, with Washington taking the third down reps.
Second Choice: Vernon Gholston, DE/OLB, Ohio State
David Harris turned out to be a fantastic pick up in last year’s draft. Between him and Darrelle Revis, the Jets had one of the better defensive drafts last season.
If they decide to go defense with this pick (or if McFadden is off the board and the two big defensive linemen are both taken), Gholston is the guy. He will fit perfectly into the New England-style defense Mangini wants to run in New York.
Close Third: Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC
The Jets will take a close look at Pete Carroll’s former nose tackle Sedrick Ellis.
How are these numbers: 58 tackles, 12.5 tackles for a loss, 8.5 sacks, seven pass deflections, two fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble.
He’s quick, he’s strong, and he’s athletic.
The knock on him is that he might not be big enough to play an effective nose tackle in the pros, at least initially. He also has some injury concerns. But the Jets could certainly do worse than Sedrick Ellis.
I still think, in the end, the Jets look long and hard at moving down. They’re not a player away—they’re a bunch of players away. And even if he doesn’t like to admit it anymore, Mangini is a product of the Belichick system.
Move down, build up picks, then replenish and refresh your roster with an abundance of middle round draft picks. Maybe snag an additional first round pick next year in the process.
Coming up next, everyone’s favorite whipping boy: the New England Patriots.
Until then...

Don't know if Kellen Clemens is the guy--but in my opinion Chad Pennington is the better option.
I don't know about McFadden because they have Thomas Jones--but if he is available they have to take him. The Jets have alot to work on. Their 3-4 defensive scheme was horrible all season.
Jerricho Cotchery was really their only good playmaker and even though he only had two TD's, he had over 1,000 yards receiving.
Hopefully year three goes alot better for the "Man Genius".

Pennington has topped out. He's a decent QB with a weak arm. He can run an offense, but can't carry it. I think your QB needs to have the ability to carry it, if you plan on winning consistantly in the NFL.
Not sure about Clemens, but you have to give him a shot at some point....see what you have, then decide if you need to move on.

If McFadden is still available at six, there is no doubt that the Jet's will take him, but I'm not so sure that he will fall this far...
But I also predicted Brady Quinn to go in the top five last year, so anythings possible.

I try to model my mocks after what I think will happen, as opposed to what should happen.
Every year some team in the top 10 does something head-scratchingly stupid (hence my Oakland pick) and a player drops further than expected (in my mock, that's McFadden).
I don't think the Jets will end up using this pick. In my opinion, it'll be traded. Especially if McFadden is still there.

A couple of things. The Jets do not need Mc Fadden. He has NYC bust written all over him anyway. They need help at receiver and on defense. This would be a luxury pick.

Well if we must talk about the Jets then lets go and do it. If you wanna blame anyone for the Jets season of misery just blame that front office. Chad pennington absolutely sucks and i'll talk to anyone that wants to say otherwise. How can they possibly think this guy can win them a superbowl? How can any loyal jet fan think that this guy is good. He's got the highest completion percentage of all time because they throw pussy ass 2 yard out routes that pennington stuggles with. I swear i can eat a whole slice of pizza and have a beer by the time the ball can get to coles on a 15 yard out route which by the way if you can't make then you don't belong in the NFL. It's is actually comical to watch a jets game when their losing in the 4th quarter by more then 3 points with the game on the line. All the opposing defense does is sit in the prevent and watch pennington put his whole body into a throw that only goes about 5 -8 yards while the clock keeps running and it takes about 5 plays to move the ball 20-25 yards. The league has got pennington figured out just sit back in the cover two and wait for a floater to come your way (aaron ross week 5-2 picks 1 TD). We're talking about a franchise that TRADED THERE #1 PICK FOR KYLE BRADY( YES GO LOOK IT UP). They couldn't run the ball because there line sucked (nice job letting Pete Kendall go because you couldn't find another million laying around to pay the backbone of your offensive line). This team is in trouble big time and not even Mcfadden can save them. To be honest i don't think drafting a QB in this draft would be smart either cause i'm not impressed with any of the options. Well i'll stop my rambling I guess it sucks to be a New York Football fan, O wait a sec no it doesn't It just sucks to be a Jets fan. I feel bad for all of you. GIANTS! BALLIN!! SUPERBOWL!!! ELI!!!! M-V-P!!!!!!!!!

The Jets gave up 53 sacks between Kellen Clemens and Chad Pennington. Their offensive line needs help more then the running game. Thomas Jones did only average 3.6 yards per game but he still ran for 1119 yards. The Jets had the 31st ranked red zone scoring offense in the NFL. They need help on offense bad. Drafting McFadden could have the similar effect on the Jets as Adrian Peterson did on the Vikings. It likely won't though unless the Jets beef up their offensive line in the off-season.

This is a tough one because they need so much and can only solve one problem with this pick.
Can you 5-11 again
from 5 months ago
The issue isn't yards, it's productive yards. Scoring points, getting firstdowns, etc. You either need a passing offense similar to New Englands or a real running game to win in the NFL.
The Jets passing offense isn't that great, so they need a more productive running game. Not in total yards, but in productivity.

I am not sure anyone sees that this offense gave up after game 3 when Chad still had the lead. No one finished routes aside from JC - they quit. If it's not Clemens, trade Vilma to the Browns and get Brady Quinn. but they need to do something about QB -shit, package Chad and Vilma for Quinn and winslow, plus a 2nd rounder next year.
. Jones and LW can handle the running with an all pro guard, free agency please. and for god sake they need a receiver who's over 6 feet. Anyway - free agency should be where we do the most damage, V.Golston is our first pick - McFadden will not fall to us, it's the Jets, slip down and maybe shore up with a later round pick.
And mr Pat Fan. Please, stop making excuses for a coach who is a filthy human being. He's not a good person. He cheats, lies, and is largely irresponsible, there is nothing he won't do to win and that makes for a great HC, but the worst kind of person. Get over the loss, the deserved it, they got smacked around like they smacked around the rams, it's the same game, you're on the other end, cry elsewhere as the rest of the world rejoices. If they loose rings, great, any shitty thing that can happen to them makes me smile, they were arrogant and showed both on and off the field they have no integrity and no idea of competition. They got smacked for running their mouths. that's how it works.

Do you really think you can package a quarterback with no arm who wouldn't start on any team outside New York and a LB who's coming off a season ending injury for Brady Quinn, a pro bowl TE, and a second round pick?
Really?

you really have to see how things pan out, I like most jet fans want a stud player in the the draft. Every body likes Darren Mc Fadden , and theres probably an 80% chance we won't get him. With the Raiders signing Vargas , Miami has Ronnie Brown, St. Loius has Jackson , Atlanta will probably go for Matt Ryan, KC has LJ, The Raiders may look to add need and w. Vargas and Lamont Jordan, You May see McFadden Fall to the JETS who certainly wont let him go to new england, we will have to wait and see . and it will be exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SeanMC should take his tongue out of the Patriot's asses and admit that Bellicheat is scum. The only thing sweeter than the Giants' Super Bowl victory was the fact that they beat the Patriots. Bellicheat didn't have the decency or balls to stay on the field and congratulate the better team.
