Coach Mike Smith as Defensive Coordinator

Getting back to the playoffs will be difficult but not impossible if the Falcons make some changes immediately. Despite the obvious roster limitations the Falcons can improve substantially if they are willing to take action now.
Coach Mike Smith could make a huge difference if he makes some changes. The problem is that he is not likely to take such bold actions without some pressure from above. Arthur Blank needs to realize that a few key moves are necessary to get this team playing its best. Fortunately the answers are in-house and do not involve roster changes.
With some pressure from Blank, coach Smith should replace Alvin Reynolds with a defensive backs coach that will demand more discipline and technique. Coach Reynolds is just not getting through to the secondary. The defensive backs and the safeties are constantly being caught out of position and taking bad angles.
Secondly and more importantly, Mike Smith himself must take over the defensive play calling. Brian Van Gorder is just not calling good games. His team is outscored in the third quarter with regularity. Coach Smith did a great job in Jacksonville, maybe he can motivate the defense to toughen up and play hard for the whole game.
The players are who they are and that can't be changed much at this point. The coaching can be changed without too much trouble. The Atlanta Falcons need Arthur Blank to exert his power and get coach Smith to do the obvious before all playoff hopes slip away.
