Stephon Marbury heading to Miami Heat?
The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
12/1/2008
Back to business on a Monday Morning at the Rumor Mill.
It's the first of the month, which means I have to start with a Stephon Marbury update. We have followed the Marbury/Knicks saga over the last month, and it seems that we may see an end soon.
Miami has made it known that they are shopping swingman Shawn Marion, who of course, thrived in the Mike D’Antoni Phoenix Suns system. The Heat could use a veteran point guard, like Steph, to play aside Dwayne Wade, and help out rookie Mario Chalmers in crunch time.
The NY Post reports NBA Players Association attorney Hal Biagas has reached out to teams to see their interest in Marbury. The Miami Heat are said to be the top priority. Marbury, Knicks Management, and The Players Association will all be getting together early this week to agree on a buyout and put the final touches on his days as a Knick.
The Post also reports that Marbury blasted Knicks management and soon to be ex-teammate Quentin Richardson. He says of Richardson,
"When things got bad and then worse, guys like Quentin Richardson say, ‘I don’t consider him a teammate.’ He lets teammates out to dry. He didn’t care I was his teammate when I was banished. They left me out for dead. It’s like we’re in
a foxhole and I’m facing the other way. If I got shot in the head by my own guys in my foxhole. And they didn’t even give me an honorable death.”

if the new york knicks aquire shawn marion they will deffentialy become a playoff contender. Even thought at this rate they still might make the playoffs. Stephon Marbury needs to leave New York and just continue on with his career.

nah, this wouldn't work. marion and dantoni supposedly had a falling out and thats why marion demanded to be traded. he didn't like his role with the suns. i bet he wishes he stayed, but i dont know if he and dantoni would work

I like the idea of Marion coming to the Knicks and I love the idea of getting rid of Marbury (mainly because both sides have now officially called it quits)...This deal actually may hold water simply because, in an effort to bring the NBA back to its glory days (As was the case when they allowed the Celtics and Lake show to be reborn in the first of the classic rivalries), The Knicks/Heat battles brought people into the seats and got a whole lot of Primetime play....a WHOLE LOT. Senior Riley was himself a soldier in these battles and so too was Sr. Walsh...and Chief, Sr. Stern, basked in the glory.
Imagine this rivalry reborn....A pissed off Starbury is just the villain, ala Timmy Hardaway or even Reggie Miller, that New York needs. Those West Coast rivalries have failed to bring in the passion and the viewers the way that the old East Coast rivalries did in the 80s and 90s. New York generates the most revenue of all the teams and the Garden will be the hottest ticket in the entire Northern hemisphere.
Fans would look to Marion as an instant playoff birth and a key player in landing Mr. 2010 and possibly another 2010r to re-heat (no pun intended) the east. And oh, the Celts/Knicks battles were'nt all bad either....this move would rekindle some old passions, and get the US (dare I say it) back to full New York Style-B-Ball mode.

Miami wouldn't dare trade Marion for Marbury. Do they want him? Sure they do, but why would you trade a great basketball player in Marion to the Knicks for a guy they're just trying to get rid of? I say, be patient and hope there's a buyout, or dump guys like Mark Blount (who has two years left in his contract...2010?). I want to see a blockbuster trade, something like Boozer, Camby, and Marbury to the Heat. Marion and Quinn to the Jazz. Blount and Harping to the Knicks. Haslem and Banks to the Clippers. Check out the numbers for yourself...it would work.

The Knicks need a Center, not another forward.

Trading Marion for Marbury is a dumb decision for the Heat, should they do so. The Knicks need to just stop the prolonging and just give the man his buyout, no matter how much money it takes. This is a decision that can be bennificial to the Knicks' future in that they can use the extra roster spot to sign a free agent that can play for them right now, or to sign a rookie and develop him for next season. The Heat need to acquire Marbury via free agency, waive Marcus Banks, and eventually down the line they should trade Marion for a solid player or two to start or even spark us off the bench.
So all in all, Knicks drop Marbury, Heat sign him, eventually trade marion for decent reserves.
