College Football Rankings: Does South Carolina Deserve a Top 20 Ranking?
After an embarrassing home loss to Auburn last week, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier decided to make a switch at quarterback, replacing senior Stephen Garcia with inexperienced sophomore Connor Shaw.
This looks like it’s the final straw for Garcia, who has had an up and down career in Columbia.
The senior signal-caller just wasn’t cutting it this season, as he was only completing 51 percent of his passes.
Garcia’s inconsistent play has been one of the main reasons that South Carolina has been one of the most disappointing teams of the season so far.
After an offseason full of hype, the Gamecocks haven’t come close to looking as good as advertised.
Sure, they’re 4-1 on the season, but with no victories over ranked opponents to speak of, it’s kind of hard to justify giving this team a Top 20 ranking at this point.
The talent is there to make another run in the SEC East, but there’s no doubt that this South Carolina squad still has a lot left to prove.
With stars like RB Marcus Lattimore and WR Alshon Jeffery surrounding him, Shaw doesn’t have to come in and be a hero, but he’s got to get this offense moving with more consistency and really take advantage of all the weapons this team has.
That’s something Garcia failed to do.
