College Football Rankings 2011: Gamecocks Look Done with Stephen Garcia Benching
Even though a 4-1 record is nothing to complain about, South Carolina has still been one of the most disappointing teams of the early part of the 2011 season.
Many experts felt that with so much returning talent on both sides of the ball, the Gamecocks would be one of the most dominant teams in the SEC this season, but so far, they’ve been far from it.
With so many explosive weapons like RB Marcus Lattimore and WR Alshon Jeffery, the offense was expected to carry the team to an SEC East division title this season, but the unit is only currently ranked 7th in the conference in both total offense and scoring offense.
Somebody had to pay the price for the offense’s shortcomings and that somebody turned out to be QB Stephen Garcia, who has been benched by coach Steve Spurrier after South Carolina’s loss to Auburn last week.
This won’t be the first time Garcia, who has completed just 51 percent of his passes and thrown five more interceptions than touchdowns, has been benched this season, but this time it looks like it will probably be for good.
With the benching likely comes the beginning of the Connor Shaw era at South Carolina, along with a world of uncertainty.
In the few times we’ve seen Shaw come in, the offense has looked unstable to say the least and the young sophomore signal-caller has a lot to prove, especially now that this team seems to be losing its focus.
