With 6:57 left in the first quarter of their game against the Auburn Tigers, South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia connected with star wide receiver Alshon Jeffery on a 50-yard touchdown pass.
But this wasn't just any touchdown reception—this was an incredible touchdown reception that could only be made by a superstar.
Any South Carolina fan, or any college football fan really, can tell you that Jeffery is that type of star. Catches like this are becoming old hat for him.
His presence, along with that of running back Marcus Lattimore, has vaulted South Carolina into the top 10 of the rankings.
Before those two came along, the Steve Spurrier-led Gamecocks were a solid program, but they could never get over that hump from being a six- or seven-win team to being a nine- or maybe 10-win team.
Now, they are hoping that 10 wins is just the beginning.
South Carolina will certainly be hoping that this big catch will get Jeffery going a little bit. He hasn't been invisible by any means so far this season, but he has yet to take off like he has in previous seasons.
Coming into today's game, he had 14 catches for 246 yards and a touchdown. For many other receivers, those numbers would be more than fine. That's how high the bar has been set for Jeffery, however.
He hasn't had a big game since their September 10th game against Georgia, when he had 85 yards receiving in a win. He has yet to crack 100 yards in a game. With 59 yards already before halftime, his first 100-yard game of the season might be coming today.
