QB Shaun Hill Signs Three-year Deal with 49ers
Quarterback Shaun Hill—who went 2-0 as a starter for the San Francisco 49ers last season—is expected to sign a three-year contract Tuesday, setting him up to compete with Alex Smith for the starting job in 2008.

Commentary: Hill, 28, was the most effective quarterback for the 49ers last season.  He completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 501 yards and five touchdowns, with one interception.  His passer rating of 101.3 was almost double that of both Smith (57.2) and Trent Dilfer (55.1).

It will be interesting to see whether Smith is, and can stay, healthy.  If so, we’ll have to wait and see if Hill is allowed to challenge him for the starter position in new coordinator Mike Martz's offense.

Fantasy Football Impact: It won't be known until the above questions are answered.  But any fantasy team counting on the 49ers' quarterback to yield victory is in deep trouble.
