Word has filtered out that during a Celtics softball game at Fenway Park, Rajon Rondo—their star point guard—played ping pong with the Green Monster.

Rondo purportedly hit several balls off the left field wall in their team exhibition game, according to Kevin Garnett in a published interview with CSN New England.

With basketball on hiatus, and with Rondo considering other work options, perhaps he can add baseball player to his list.

The Red Sox certainly need a decent outfielder during the final week of the season.

Advice on such a career change would be nearby for Rondo. Danny Ainge too tried to become Roy Hobbes, but found his baseball bat was no “Wonderboy.”

Before switching to baseball, Rondo ought to give Ainge a phone call. The curveball made second baseman Ainge a better basketball player.

For several years now, Rajon Rondo has been the basketball equivalent of Jacoby Ellsbury.

Both have blossomed into special talents.  If Ellsbury wins a World Series and an MVP award, he can match up against Rajon.

Both men are speedsters. Ellsbury is noted for all that stealing, but then again, so is Rondo!

Ellsbury had 70 steals in one of his great years, but Rondo stole the ball 189 times in 2010.

Though we see Rondo as a second baseman in the tradition of Dustin Pedroia or Danny Ainge, the Red Sox could most likely use him in right field, prowling the wide expanse of Fenway next to Ellsbury.

Having seen Rondo wearing a baseball cap many times, we know this is a fashion necessity.

Since he has given up headbands, the transformation to wearing a cap may be easier. Rondo likes to look good, and he could continue to wear all the same protective gear that he dons in basketball.

We still scratch our proverbial head over Ellsbury’s fashion statement, wearing just one long sleeve beneath his baseball jersey. We suspect that Rondo could even it out if he wore only one sleeve on the opposite arm.

Rondo said he will decide on October 1st what he will do for the season. The Red Sox need him today, because they may not make it to October.
