Brewers Make A Pair Of Minor Signings
The Milwaukee Brewers signed Jason Bourgeois to a Minor League contract and RJ Swindle to a Major League contract on Tuesday.
Bourgeois, a nine-year Minor League veteran, spent most of his time at Triple-A Charlotte as a member of the Chicago White Sox organization. In his career he has played games at second base, shortstop, third base, and all three outfield position. This past season he hit .286 with a .335 OBP, nine home runs, 83 runs, and 30 stolen bases. In the nine seasons he has spent in the Minor Leagues, Bourgeois has stolen a total of 201 bases. Whether he will have a role in the Major Leagues next season is yet to be known. At most he would be a reserve, but will have to battle with players such as Casey McGehee, Alcides Escobar, Mat Gamel, Hernan Iribarren, Tony Gwynn Jr, and Brad Nelson for a bench role.
Swindle, a 14th-round Draft pick by the Red Sox in 2004, is a soft-tossing, left-handed reliever. As a reliever in the minors over the past four seasons, Swindle has posted a phenomenal 1.58 ERA in 194 innings while striking out 226 and walking only 25 batters. With the sudden retirement of Salomon Torres, and Guillermo Mota, Eric Gagne, and Brian Shouse all being free agents, the status of the Brewers bullpen is a huge question mark for the 2009 season. Should the Brewers not re-sign Brian Shouse, Swindle should have a strong chance of breaking camp with Brewers.
