Cristiano Ronaldo: 10 Reasons He Will Outshine Lionel Messi This Season

0 of 10

Real Madrid did not have a good game against Levante this week as they suffered a 1-0 loss, which puts a lot of pressure on the team. However, Jose Mourinho and his men would understand the need to put this game behind them and focus on the next game.

Mourinho introduced Cristiano Ronaldo only in the second half of the game and though the Portugal forward tried his best, he could not help 10-men Madrid score against Levante.

However, despite the loss, Madrid have an excellent chance of winning major trophies this season but for that, they will need to be at their best. Barcelona offer Madrid the strongest competition in both the La Liga and the Champions League and Madrid will have to be better than the Catalans in order to be successful this season.

Ronaldo will be Madrid's most important player this season as well considering that he has the ability to win games on his own and he will need to outshine Barcelona's Lionel Messi to help Real Madrid achieve success this season.

Messi has played a key role in the Blaugrana's consistent success in the last three seasons but Ronaldo has the ability to be better than the Argentina international and here are 10 reasons why he could outshine Messi this season.

1. Desire to Be the Best Footballer in the World

1 of 10

Cristiano Ronaldo is a player who always desires to be the best in the world and it is no secret that he wants to be considered as the best ahead of Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

However, Barcelona under Pep Guardiola have arguably the strongest team in the world and Messi along with Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta and co. have enjoyed considerable success in the past few years.

However under Jose Mourinho, Madrid have a better chance of winning major trophies this season and Ronaldo's hunger to be the best player in the world will only be beneficial to the Los Blancos.

If Ronaldo can perform to his potential, then Madrid have a great chance of winning the title this season, having proven in the previous season that they can beat Barcelona.

2. Jose Mourinho's Desire to Win Major Trophies and Ability to Inspire Players

2 of 10

There is no doubt that Jose Mourinho is a manager who loves challenges, which is why he took the job at Real Madrid despite the club sacking a number of proven managers in the last decade.

Madrid were only able to win the Copa del Rey in the previous season.

Though they did not win the La Liga or the Champions League, they showed that they can match up to the Catalans and can win against them.

Mourinho is a manager who gets the best from his players and despite the club possessing plenty of quality players in their squad, Ronaldo remains their most potent attacking threat and he will need to be at his best.

The Portuguese tactician has shown in the past that he can make established players play even better like Wesley Sneijder did at Inter Milan and he could be the manager who can inspire Ronaldo to achieve even greater success in the future.

3. Ronaldo's Aerial Ability

Ronaldo is a player who has lots of determination and has shown tenacity throughout his playing career.

He is also quite a complete player in the sense that he is strong in the air or on the ground and is one of the most skilled players in the world.

The Portuguese international is strong in the air in addition to his excellence on the pitch and also, he is always a threat from set-pieces.

If Madrid are not able to create many opportunities in a game, they could play long balls as well and considering that Ronaldo is excellent in the air and also has excellent ball control, he could threaten more in these situations as well.

Also, Real Madrid have some excellent set-piece takers like Mesut Ozil and Xabi Alonso and their delivery into the box could also find Ronaldo who is a powerful in the air as well.

4. More Free-Kick Specials from Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo is one of the best free-kick takers in the world and it is rather inevitable that he will continue to score from more set-pieces this season.

There are very few set-piece specialists who are better than him and he can shoot from a wide range and also, his powerful free-kicks also result in opportunities for others through rebounds and deflections which also lead to goals.

Xabi Alonso is generally entrusted with the job of free-kicks when it is too far out but if it is in range, Ronaldo is always the most likely player to shoot.

Also, he has a tendency to win tight games by lashing in goals from a set-piece which is why his ability on free-kicks is very important to the team.

5. Great Understanding with Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria

Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria have established themselves in this team after putting in some excellent performances in the previous season.

Both of them have also established a good relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Benzema, in particular, has also benefited from Ronaldo because he has more space and has shown that he has the quality to score vital goals for Madrid.

Ronaldo is a player who has plenty of individual brilliance but he could be frustrated if he does not get the service.

However, in players like Di Maria and Benzema, Real Madrid have found players who can create and score for Madrid and Ronaldo will also benefit from the performances of the duo.

Benzema, Di Maria and Ronaldo also swap positions at times to pull defenders out of position and the trio have the quality to score goals against any opposition in the world.

6. The Emergence of Mesut Ozil and the Return of Kaka

Mesut Ozil was signed in the last summer and has developed into one of the best midfielders in the game.

The Germany international has not taken much time to adjust to Real Madrid's style of play and has become one of the most important players under Mourinho.

He is excellent at creating goal-scoring opportunities and he will only continue to get better having emerged as one of the most creative players in the world.

Also, the return of Ricardo Kaka to full fitness will help Real Madrid and Ronaldo to a certain extent considering that he is a high quality player and if he recaptures his best form, Kaka and Ronaldo can dominate any defense in the world.

Mourinho has shown good faith in Kaka and with more time, his confidence could come back and he could also be a very important player for Madrid this season.

7. Confidence from Last Season's Incredible Record of 40 League Goals in 2010-11

7 of 10

Cristiano Ronaldo has always been compared with Barcelona's mesmerizing Lionel Messi and when he came to Madrid, it did set up an interesting personal duel between the two most talented players in the current world of football.

Though Ronaldo had an injury hit first season, he was scoring a lot of goals and improved on his goal tally in the last season.

He notched a career best of 40 league goals and was ahead of Messi in the previous season.

Also, he did score against FC Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey Final and will be more confident going into this season.

With plenty of goals under his belt and a settled team, it does seem like he could have another excellent season for Madrid which is important for their trophy aspirations.

8. Ronaldo Will Become a Better Team Player Under Jose Mourinho

8 of 10

Jose Mourinho is a manager who wants every player to produce his best effort on the pitch and he is a manager, who wants to win trophies regularly.

Also, the Portuguese tactician is a manager who will not tolerate nonsense from his players as Mario Balotelli found out in their time at Inter Milan.

Ronaldo is one of the finest players in the world but he has been a bit selfish on some occasions.

Mourinho has helped players realize their potential in their past and if Ronaldo can make more assists, it would be even more helpful to the team.

The Portuguese striker is a player of high confidence and it does seem like he genuinely believes that he can beat the keeper from various angles and ranges but if he can produce more assists, then it will help the team even more which is what Mourinho will be keen to achieve this season.

9. Fabio Coentrao Crossing and Understanding Will Also Assist Ronaldo

9 of 10

Real Madrid made some important signings in the summer like Nuri Sahin and Hamit Altintop and they also signed Portugal international Fabio Coentrao from Benfica in the summer.

The versatile defender played well in preseason and though he has not had the best start to his season, it is clear that he is a high quality player and could have a lot to offer for Madrid.

He shares a good understanding with Ronaldo having played together in the Portugal national team and should he be employed at left back, he will provide the width while Ronaldo can cut inside, which he likes to do.

Coentrao is good at crossing and can be a dangerous threat down the wings.

Ronaldo can use his aerial ability to good effect and can make those crosses count and also, his understanding with Coentrao could be useful in opening up tight defenses.

10. Lesser Pressure on Ronaldo with a Settled Team and Consistent Performers

10 of 10

Cristiano Ronaldo was arguably Real Madrid's best player in the previous season but in the last season, some other players also showed their capability and could take more responsibility this season.

At the start of the last season, there was huge pressure on Ronaldo because it was bound to take time for the team to adjust under a new manager and with many new signings as well.

However, this is not the case this season as the team have played for more than a year under Mourinho and look more comfortable with his style of play.

Mesut Ozil, who was signed in the last summer, has made rapid strides since arriving in Madrid and has established himself as one of the world's best midfielders in a short span of time.

Similarly, Karim Benzema has also progressed well under Mourinho as he recaptured his best form last season and also, there are many excellent players in the current team who can perform consistently for Madrid.

If many of them perform consistently, then it will mean lesser pressure on Ronaldo which means he will be even more dangerous.
