Newcastle United: 10 Great Geordie Fan Chants of the Toon Army

Newcastle United fans are some of the most loyal and vocal in the world.

Despite a lack of success on the pitch, they retain a sizable following, and even during their recent spell in the Championship, they managed to attract the fifth-highest average attendance in the country.

Here are 10 of the best chants regularly heard at St James' Park, and in away ends up and down the country. The list includes some regular classics, player songs and a little bit of Mackem baiting!

The Blaydon Races

The Blaydon Races is a famous Geordie folk song dating back to 1862. A variation on the first verse and chorus are sung regularly at Newcastle matches:

I went to Blaydon races,

'Twas on the 9th of June,

Eighteen Hundred and Sixty Two

On a Summer's Afternoon,

We took the bus from Balmbras,

And she was heavy laden,

Away we went along Collingwood Street,

That's on the Road to Blaydon

 

Oh me lads, you should've seen us gannin'

Passing the folks along the road,

just as they were stannin'

All the lads and lasses there,

Geordie Boot Boys

This chant is a long-time classic, every match has at least one rendition of:

We are the Geordies, 

The Geordie Boot Boys,

And we are mental,

And we are mad,

And we are the loyalist football supporters,

The World has ever had.

Toon, Toon, Black and White Army

Not exactly the most lyrically-inspired Newcastle chant, but certainly a classic, and heard at every match:

Toon, Toon, Black and White Army

La, La, La, La, La, La....

Simple but effective:

La, La, La, La, La, La,

La, La, La, Geordies!

We Don't Care About Ashley

The Mike Ashley regime at Newcastle United has been far from popular, and there are a couple of regular protest songs. This one is the least offensive and sums up the situation pretty well:

We don't care about Ashley,

He don't care about me,

All we care about is NUFC

Pogo, If You Love the Toon

Particularly popular among the younger supporters:

Oh Coloccini

Fabricio Colocinni is Newcastle's United captain and a cult figure on Tyneside. His popularity and hair are celebrated in this chant:

Oh Colocinni, you are the love of my life,

Oh Colocinni I'd let you **** my wife,

Oh Colocinni, I want curly hair too

Mackem in Milan

Newcastle have had their fair share of European adventures in recent times, gracing stadiums such as the Camp Nou and San Siro.

The trip to Inter Milan in 2003, where 15,000 traveling Newcastle fans watched Alan Shearer bag two goals in a 2-2 draw, inspired this chant:

Have you ever seen a Mackem in Milan,

Have you ever seen a Mackem in Milan,

Have you ever seen a Mackem,

Ever see a Mackem,

Ever seen a Mackem in Milan?

Recent signing Davide Santon, having joined from Inter Milan, ingratiated himself to the Geordie faithful straight away by admitting he had never seen a Mackem in Milan.

Any O'Brien

More Sunderland bashing in this chant. Liam O'Brien scored a famous free-kick goal in a 2-1 win over Sunderland in 1992. Andy O'Brien scored a vital equaliser to prevent Newcastle from losing at Sunderland in 2001.

Scoring past Sunderland as a Newcastle player will always make you a legend:

One Bobby Robson

There have been few more popular or loved figures in World Football than Sir Bobby Robson. While the chant itself may have been sung with the names of many managers worldwide, this version will always be special at his home town club:

Walking is a Robson Wonderland.
