Muhlenberg College is now 4-0, undefeated in the GNCHC, going into their semester break.  How did this happen?

Well, let's see.  Kutztown University came to the Rinks at Lehigh Valley Friday night in a conference matchup.  Muhlenberg defeated the Kutztown Mountaineers in both conference games last season, and defeated them again this weekend by a score of 6-3 in a dirty, exciting, and extremely long game that was the longest three period game in GNCHC history.

After the first period, Muhlenberg was playing horribly, but was still up 1-0.  The second period ended with Andrew Milanesi scoring two goals en route to a 4-2 lead.

Then the drama started...

The zamboni, coming onto the ice for the second intermission, put the blades down too low, and cut a twenty foot long hole in the ice.  After fifty minutes of attempting to fix the ice, the referees decided to move the game to the other rink in the complex.

When the game, players, and the hundreds of fans in attendance were settled into the front rink, the zamboni broke down, spewing the smell of propane everywhere.  A half hour later, the game was restarted, and the Mules immediately scored another goal to go up by three.

Then, eight minutes into the third period, the glass broke in the corner and the game was delayed another half hour while the plexiglass was replaced by the rink maintenance staff.

As the game restarted, Kutztown gave a scare to the Mules, coming out and scoring a goal to come within two goals.  Kutztown started outplaying Muhlenberg for the next five minutes, and seemed to be ready to cut the lead in half when they were given a power play with four minutes to go in the game.

However, Muhlenberg freshman, Andrew Milanesi, cleared the puck from his own blue line, won a race to the puck at the far blue line while shorthanded, then made a beautiful toe drag through the legs of the final Kutztown defenseman, and backhanded a powerful shot past the Mountaineers' goalie for a hat trick.  As the hats came pouring down from the stands, Muhlenberg looked to once again take control.

The Kutztown players started to lose control of their emotions as a player was sent to the locker room by the Mountaineers' coach for displaying an offensive signal to the Muhlenberg fans.  Then, as soon as the buzzer sounded for the end of the game, the Kutztown defenseman shot a puck at a rowdy fan in the crowd.

Assistant captain, Brad Zatcoff, took great offense to this, as did the entire Muhlenberg team, and threw a devastating punch at the defenseman. The Kutztown bench emptied, pummeling Brad Zatcoff, and 'Berg captain, Robbie Janowitz, flew into the pile to defend his assistant captain.  After seeing this, 'Berg's other assistant captain, Craig Marone, also joined the pile to protect his captain and assistant captain.

The brawl ensued for about five minutes, and after a controlled handshake in which the refs threatened any misbehavior with a DQ, the Mules left the ice with a victory.

Captain Robbie Janowitz and assistant captain Craig Marone received game misconducts, while Marone received a DQ for the Mules' next game against TCNJ, which they lost 10-4.

Muhlenberg plays Rowan University next weekend, and continue their league play on January 16th against the University of Scranton.
