The fight between Colton Orr and Eric Godard in a Rangers' blow-out of the Penguins was special for me as a fan. I find that fights are hard to watch and maintain a neutral standing throughout. As a Rangers fan, I was already thrilled at the score, but the fight made this a special night.
The Penguins were having a tough time winning games. After winning the Eastern Conference in 2008, the Penguins could not get a streak together in the new season and were drifting downwards. The Rangers were coming off bad games by Henrik Lundqvist, and this win actually put them in first place in the Atlantic Division.
After the Rangers scored their fourth goal in the second period of this game, Godard engaged with Orr in this scrap. Orr seemed to have won the fight, and the Rangers completely dominated the game in all aspects. This game was important to Rangers fans because of the Penguins' series win in the playoffs in 2008 over the Rangers—this game was a little pay-back for that.
Orr left the Rangers after this season and signed a contract with Toronto. The Penguins ended up winning the Stanley Cup that season while the Rangers lost in the first round of the playoffs to Washington.
Hey, when you're a Rangers fan, these types of nights haven't come too often lately.
Enjoy the fight, and sorry for being a homer in the article.
Keep the military in your thoughts and prayers.
