Argentina vs. Nigeria: Lionel Messi Is Finally a Superstar for Argentina
Lionel Messi has been a great player for Argentina—he just hasn't been Lionel Messi great. Those days are over. Lionel Messi has figured out how to be Messi great for Argentina.
Argentina just completed a two-game sweep of Nigeria with a 3-1 victory in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Messi was absolutely brilliant in leading the way. He was able to single-handedly break down the Nigerian defense time and time again.
While his play on the pitch was fantastic, it is his attitude off of it that really points to the greatness to come for Argentina.
Messi is wildly popular in India and its subcontinents (think Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson combined) and the countries' affection for him appears to have driven him to new heights in effort and preparation. These adoring fans have been given what is a once in a lifetime chance to see their favorite star.
In this process, Messi learned of the dues of obligation.
Argentina reportedly let in around 1,000 Indian fans in what was supposed to be a closed door practice. And once they were in, the Argentinians put on a display.
The two sides split into two groups and scrimmaged. Messi mesmerized the crowd during the scrimmage as his side won, 2-0.
This is evidence of Messi growing into his role as a leader with his national team. He is beginning to accept the responsibility of being the heart of the team, and he is taking the honor seriously. Messi has even begun wearing his captain's armband.
Messi, as quoted on isitkim.com:
The responsibility is the same we all have with the national team. I thought it was time to use it and hopefully bring me luck. I’m happy, calm and thankful.
Messi has matured into his role as the central figure for his national team, and now he is ready to take them to new heights.
