Fantasy owners get to make some big decisions this week, and there already are plenty of injuries with which to deal heading into week one.
There will be a few decisions necessary by Thursday for the Saints-Packers game, as there are a number of start-able fantasy players in the season opener. Too many to name. Luckily, so far, none of the major players in that game have injury concerns.
But the same does not ring true for several other studly fantasy options:
Peyton Manning [QB, Colts]
The Colts have taken a dramatically different course, announcing on Monday that Manning won’t practice this week, and that he likely will be listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game.
Fantasy owners should have prepared for this when they drafted Manning. If you did so in your draft, prepare your backup option for the start this weekend. It looks like a certainty at this point.
Arian Foster [RB, Texans]
John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reiterated Sunday that he believes Arian Foster (hamstring) will be ready for Week 1.
Finally some really optimistic news for Foster owners. Let’s see if he actually practices in full sometime this week. If so, he would be a must-start obviously.
Rashad Jennings [RB, Jaguars]
Jennings has been placed on injured reserve, meaning his 2011 season is over. Jennings broke the news on Twitter. “A Big Thx to all my Fans for the prays & support,” Jennings wrote. “[The Jaguars] have decided to place me on IR this yr. I promise i’ll return stronger.”
Jennings was being drafted fairly high due to his status as No. 2 behind Maurice Jones-Drew and his gimpy knee. But now Jennings is out for the year and fantasy owners in deep leagues need to know this name: Deji Karim. He now is the backup to MJD.
Sidney Rice [WR, Seahawks]
Seattle Seahawks head coach has been reported saying that wide receiver Sidney Rice is questionable for his Week 1 start against the San Francisco 49ers on September 11. Rice is recovering from a shoulder injury and may not be able to practice much during the week leading up to the game.
Not that his prospects were looking all that great with Tarvaris Jackson behind center, but this compounds the problem for Rice owners. At this point, he is no better than a WR3.
Here are today’s great reads:
- More on Deji Karim. He had a pretty nice preseason with Maurice Jones-Drew out of the lineup and is one twisted knee away from getting a lot more playing time. He probably should be the most added player in fantasy leagues this week. Start working the waiver wire! [Roto Arcade]
- Thinking of streaming defenses this year? You should always look at the matchups, obviously, but pay particular attention to the opposing quarterbacks. Early in the season, bet against rookies. [RazzBall]
- Did not matter that Chris Johnson missed all of training camp and the preseason. He signed his new contract last week and now Johnson is ready-to-go for the season opener. Must start in all format, clearly. [SI.com]
