Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos: A Global Comparison Before Week 1
A loss is coded zero and a win is coded five. Horizontal lines indicate consecutive wins or losses.

The first regular season game between the Denver Broncos and the Oakland Raiders will be a challenge for Hue Jackson and his 2011 team.

Last year, the Raiders defeated the Broncos with a dramatic score of 59-14. The 45-point difference meant that on that day, the Raiders were much more effective than their opponent, the Broncos.

In a few days, folks will see if the Oakland Raiders will maintain that competitive edge.

Reflecting on the week-by-week outcomes of the Broncos and the Raiders in 2010 tells the story of the need for improvement in both teams.

A model using zero for loss and five for win depicts the ups and downs of both NFL teams. On eight specific weeks both teams had similar outcomes; they either both loss their game or won their game.

Here is the data:

The Broncos won the game immediately after bye week, while the Raiders loss the game after bye week in 2010.

Another observation is that the Broncos did not have any consecutive wins in 2010. The Raiders had three consecutive wins immediately after the defeat of the Broncos with a 59-14 final score.

Both teams have a young squad. Both have had personnel changes in the coaching positions.

The memory of the 45-point difference in the scores with the Raiders outperforming the Broncos in 2010 just might fire up the Broncos in 2011.

In 2010 the Oakland Raiders ended up third in AFC West, and the Denver Broncos ranked fourth in AFC West.

The Raiders scored 410 points, ranking sixth of 32 teams in the NFL. The Broncos scored 344 points, ranking 19 of the 32 teams in the NFL.

Who will win the game on Sept. 12?

If the bully in the Oakland Raiders returns early in the regular season, then the Oakland Raiders will do it again, and win their first regular season game against the Denver Broncos.
