Scores Week 1: Duck Stew
The third quarter went very well in Louisiana, especially if you enjoy duck as a key ingredient in your gumbo.
Critical mistakes by Oregon are handing the game over to LSU.
This game is huge. The winner responds to preseason hype by staking a legitimate claim for a 2011 national title bid. The loser most likely gives up team hopes of playing in the BCS championship game. It is that simple.
De’Anthony Thomas is in at running back for the Ducks. He picked up a first down and then fumbled the ball away with 7:00 left in the 3rd Quarter. LSU capitalized five plays later to take a 23-13 lead.
Thomas then dropped the ball again on the kick-off return. Three minutes later LSU capitalized again with another touchdown. Tigers 30, Ducks 13. End of the third quarter.
Turnovers were also a factor in the first half. With 1:12 left in the first quarter LSU fumbled on a bad snap in shotgun formation. Oregon recovered on the LSU 20-yard line, but was only able to capitalize with a field goal.
Oregon led the game 6-3 at the end of the first quarter when Barner fumbled a punt and gifted LSU six easy points.
Unless Oregon has a mircale up its sleeve it can kiss playing in a consecutive BCS championship game bubbye.
