Deadline Day Inter Milan signing Diego Forlan has been ruled ineligible to play for Inter in the UEFA Champions League group stages after it was revealed he made appearances for Atletico Madrid in the Europa League.
The 2010 European Champions will have to make do with Giampaolo Pazzini, Diego Milito, Luc Castaignos and Mauro Zarate to guide Inter through their group stage. With Lille, CSKA Moscow and Trabzonspor standing between Inter and a birth in the Round of 16, the strikers will certainly have their tasks cut out for them—and only Milito was present up front in Inter's successful 2010 squad.
After signing the Uruguayan forward, Inter were of the belief that he would be able to be included in their 25-man squad. However, UEFA rules would suggest that a player can only represent one club at one particular point in the competition. As a result, Forlan will only be eligible for selection if Inter qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League. It will prove to be a long wait for the international, with the Round of 16 not getting underway until February 2012.
Forlan was signed on the last day of the transfer window, along with former Lazio man Zarate. Their signings came after the departure of Samuel Eto'o. Both players will prove to be effective additions to the club; however, only Zarate will be effective in European competitions for the time being.
