The University of Texas has struck an agreement with Defensive Coordinator Will Muschamp that will keep him in Austin, and eventually lead him to the head coaching position for the Longhorns, said Athletics Director DeLoss Dodds on Tuesday. Details of the contract are still being finalized, but it will start with Muschamp's salary being raised to $900,000 on Jan. 1, 2009.

"This is a plan that has been enthusiastically agreed to by Mack Brown, President Powers, and the Board of Regents," Dodds said. "With the landscape in college football and all of the changes around the country, I've been looking at this for the last couple of years. When it's not working, you have to go outside and make changes. Things are going well here, it's working, so it's best to be prepared to build from inside, and that's what we're doing.

Am I the only one who sees this as a dick move by tu? I think in most programs, ADs, coaches, and staff alike encourage the advancement of their coordinators to head coaching positions. While on the surface, this all sounds nice, but I've been around down here for long enough to see how Texas works. Am I wrong to believe that this is just a move to keep Muschamp at Texas and squash the possibility of him coaching a successful team not called Texas? I don't think so. When is Mack Brown retiring? I didn't know it was going to be that soon. The fact is this year has opened up some pretty desirable coaching positions in a couple of major programs and to pull a gimmick to keep your coaches in place is a dick move!

In other not-so-publicized coaching moves, Mark Mangino's front butt has been offered the head coaching position at Kansas after Mangino retires, it may decline to wait for an offer from Manhattan....

That's a really ridiculous comment. Seriously? You think Texas just hoodwinked Muschamp? I'm pretty sure he's understands the situation a lot better than you and he was fired up to someday soon be the coach of the Longhorns rather than be the Tennessee or Clemson coach now.

Don't get me wrong...if that's what he wants, which is apparently obvious, good for him; maybe he doesn't want a head coaching position anywhere else, who knows. And I don't think they pulled a fast one, I just see it as a deal to keep this guy in place, when there's no speculation on Brown's retirement anytime soon, instead of letting him progress to another head coaching position. Didn't mean to sound venomous...

From their perspective it's a smart move. You're right that this is a move to keep him from coaching a successful team that's not Texas. Why should they let a great coach like Muschamp get away from them if they can help it? Plus it ensures (well maybe not ensures, but at least increases the chances) that there's a smooth transition once Brown decides to step down. There's no use in them standing idly by and watching someone like K State throw money at Muschamp if they can do something about it. Plus, in the ESPN article Muschamp makes it clear that he and his family are happy in Austin. A guaranteed $900k a year in a city and job you and your family love is a lot better than $1.5 million or so (for the 3 years you get to be successful nowadays) in a place you may not be as happy in with no guarantee of success.

One more note. Did Texas interview any black coaches? Better yet, will the BCA and Mark May admit their disappointment with Texas' failure to interview a black head coaching candidate. Last year Texas A&M, through their coaching search, failed to interview any black candidates and were nationally chastised for it. Ole Miss felt the brunt as well after hiring Nutt. Just wondering if anyone else was wondering if we'll hear any backlash from the BCA or any media for that matter.

    lol at Jim
You can use whatever rhetoric you want to describe this move. It probably was a dick move from the perspective of a school that wants Coach Boom for their head coach. I guess I wouldn't call it racist because Muschamp is the consensus best head coaching candidate in the country (just ask U-dub or Clemson or the Vols). I think all of your griping really just comes down to despair at how much this will help Texas's recruiting and continuity now along with their coaching staff quality in the future. In this sense you are probably spot on so no argument from me.
