Newcastle's move for Papiss Demba Cisse is now dead in the water with the striker remaining in Germany until at least January.

Interest in Modibo Maiga is still ongoing, and the Mali international remains the most likely signing for the Magpies.

Wild rumours of three new targets have emerged this morning:

With Carlos Tevez looking certain to remain at Manchester City, rumour has it that Newcastle have approached City about a loan move for Italian nut-case Mario Balotelli. There have been suggestions that Balotelli is friends with recent Newcastle signing Davide Santon from their days together at Inter Milan and that Santon may be able to convince his fellow Italian to come to Tyneside.

Marseille's Andre-Pierre Gignac is apparently in England with loan moves to several English clubs thought to be a possibility. Some sources have claimed that Newcastle United are now the favourites to land the Frenchman.

Meanwhile rumours have swept Twitter that Bobby Zamora was on a train to Newcastle this morning; this seems the least likely of the three new targets given his age and probable price tag.
