A trade was in the works between the Washington Capitals and the Chicago Blackhawks. The trade was rumoured to have involved Capitals center Michael Nylander.

The Blackhawks were reportedly interested in Nylander but rejected the offer after the Capitals said they wanted youngster Dustin Byfuglien.

Nylander has nine points in 16 games for Washington this season and would have to approve any deal involving him because of his no movement clause.

Meanwhile Dustin Byfuglien has loads of potential, but is too steep of a price for Chicago. Although, it is believed the two teams are still talking about a possible deal.

Also, Chicago is still very much interested in free agent Brendan Shanahan.

Hmmmmm, a forward with the puck handling skills of a defenseman, who probably allows more goals through poor play than he scores. Byfuglien is not that great, and I don't understand why he wouldn't be included for a definite upgrade in scoring.

In response to Jim's comment, Byfuglien wouldn't and shouldn't be traded do to his almost limitless potential. Something to bear in mind is that he played the majority of last season as one half of a defensive pairing, often alongside Seabrook, and the two of them really had things firing from the point. Give him some time to adjust to playing as a true forward, once he gets used to play down in front of the net, you'll see why they aren't willing to let him go for an aging goal scorer.

One other thought...a curiosity comes to mind as to where the mystical salary cap room needed to pick up a good player such as Shanahan appeared from...

Especially considering no less authority than Eddie O. said that they have about $500,000 to work with. Not sure how much money he would cost, but I'm betting it would be more than that, and I doubt the NHL's cap is as flexible as say the NBA's.

they would obviously need to make a deal to free up cap space. That deal will undoubtly involve Khabibulin that would free up 6.75 million dollars i think that more than enough to get Shanny
