The Detroit Pistons Friday night 106-95 win over the undefeated Los Angeles Lakers is the first true glimpse of what these Allen Iverson era Pistons may be capable of.
Over the last week, Detroit has been struggling to get into a rhythm with their new lineup. Their defense has been lackadaisical and their offense has been non-existent. Richard Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace have particularly struggled with the change of guard. However, none of these problems were apparent in last night's win.
The Pistons had control from the start of the game and were ahead by nine points at halftime. Chemistry was not a problem as Iverson appeared to have been playing in Detroit his entire career. Rasheed Wallace had the best game of his season with both he and Iverson finishing with 25 points. Wallace did a great job of containing L.A.'s Pau Gasol. Hamilton still struggled with his shooting but started to turn things around in the second half.
Laker's star Kobe Bryant finished with 29 points and made a valiant last ditch effort to keep his team in the winning column but it wasn't to be. The Lakers went into the game with the league's best offense but Detroit managed to hold them to just 44 points in the first half. The game was also the first time this season that L.A. had allowed a team to score 100 points.
The game was a start in the Pistons bid for a championship. As the season moves on, the chemistry between Iverson and his teammates will continue to get better. His consistent offense will be a nice addition to the Pistons playoff run who have a history of scoring droughts down the stretch.
