South Carolina Football: News, Schedule Analysis and More for 2011 Season

This may finally be the year you can add the South Carolina Gamecocks to the SEC elite. They finished with a solid 9-5 record last season and enter this year ranked No. 12 in the AP Poll.
They return 14 starters from a year ago—including the nucleus that scored 30 points per game. Expectations are high, and fans have SEC Championship and possibly the BCS Championship on their minds.
Just a couple years ago, everybody was questioning head coach Steve Spurrier and wondering if he should just hang them up. But maybe he really hasn't lost a step and the old ball coach has still got it.
We should find out more this season, but the Gamecocks are for real and are a candidate to win the SEC East.

Sophomore stud RB Marcus Lattimore doesn't have many weaknesses. He runs with great pad level, almost always seems to fall forward and finishes his runs with an exclamation point.
If there were any doubts about his Heisman candidacy they should have been put to rest after his dominating 27 rush 176 yard performance against SEC rival Georgia on the road.
Even though Lattimore had nearly 30 touches, he didn't put the ball on the ground once. So far, Lattimore has more than risen to the challenge that the Gamecocks veery difficult schedule presents.
He should continue to rack up amazing numbers as the lesser competition awaits in the next two games when the Gamecocks face Navy Midshipmen and Vanderbilt Commodores.
If he isn't leading the current and early Heisman candidates then there is a problem. That even includes Andrew Luck who has looked good but not gratin two easy Stanford wins. Another Heisman candidate Trent Richardson of Alabama had 3 TDs in Week 1 but well under 100 yards in a blowout. He did rebound with a 26 carry 111 yard 2 TD performance against Penn St. Still, his performance hasn't been as impressive as Lattimore's.
In fact, Lattimore is not only the best RB in 2011, he is in my opinion , the best collegiate RB in College Football since Ricky Williams. My major concern for Lattimore going forward is the wear and tear on his body with so many touches.
He has had almost 300 carries in his collegiate career that is only 15 games long at this point. As talented as other members of the Gamecocks team is, when tough yards are needed, Marcus Lattimore's number will be called.
By the time he is draft eligible he is likely to have carried the ball almost 900 times. That will be something for NFL scouts to consider come June of 2013 but for now he should be the odds on favorite for the Heisman trophy.

For all the talk about all of the future NFL players on the Alabama Crimson Tide roster, there is another SEC team loaded with not just next level players but next level stars.
Steve Spurrier's greatest talent may not be his play-calling and ballsy approach. It could very well be his recruiting. Spurrier's ability to bring in five-star talent has keyed this rush to national prominence.
Barring injury or off the field issue, these four players are future NFL Pro-Bowlers:
Melvin Ingram - DE/DT
Ingram is one of the most athletic players I've ever seen. Don't believe check out Ingram running a fake punt in for a 68 yard TD vs Georgia in Week 2.
His leaping ability was also on display as Spurrier trotted him for the hands team on a Georgia onside-kick attempt. Ingram leaped and actually displayed some hang-time in snagging the attempt.
Did I mention Ingram is 276lbs? This guy has a motor that is very impressive. He is the type of defensive lineman who could have success on the interior or the outside. He is a senior and after this season, he'll likely be a first round pick, especially after he wows scouts at the NFL combine.
Ja'Daveon Clowney - DE/OLB
Clowney was neutralized throughout most of the game against Georgia but he made the huge play that clinched the game. Clowney forced the fumble that Ingram scooped up an ran in for the deciding score.
Clowney was perhaps the most heavily recruited high school player in the nation and Spurrier was able to bring him to South Carolina.
Clowney's combination of size and speed is perfect for a pass-rushing defensive end or outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. At 6'6 254lbs as a 18 year old freshmen, Clowney's size and skill-set puts you in the mind of Julius Peppers. He looks like a top 10 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
Alshon Jeffery
On the offensive side of the ball, the Gamecocks have Jeffery. He is the best WR in the nation when it comes to catching the ball with his hands away from his body.
He is so strong and athletic, there isn't a DB in the nation who can check him one on one. It'll be interesting to see Dre Kirkpatrick get an opportunity to cheek him but that won't happen until a possible postseason matchup.
Jeffery has exceptional body control and overall physical skills. He will be among the top three players taken in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Marcus Lattimore
Last, bust certainly not least is Marcus Lattimore. Lattimore is the best RB in the country. I know about Trent Richardson and others but Lattimore is special. His vision, sense for the yard marker and overall instincts and football IQ is impressive.
He is a workhorse that a team can ride. This is my only worry about him. He is only two games into his sophomore year and he has already carried the ball 300 times. Even at 6'1 235 lbs, the wear and tear is a concern.
That said, Lattimore is the best college RB I've seen since Ricky Williams. He is the rare RB worth a top five selection in my opinion.
South Carolina takes on Georgia tonight in a game that both teams need. South Carolina needs to win to keep their SEC title hopes alive, even though one loss won't derail them. Georgia needs to win to keep their season alive. A loss to Boise State last week didn't help their cause and caused the fanbase to question whether or not Mark Richt should be asked to come back or if he should be let go.
South Carolina, on paper, is a better team, but that doesn't mean that this will be an easy game. Georgia has a lot of young talent to work with and quarterback Aaron Murray is arguably the best quarterback in the SEC.
South Carolina has Marcus Lattimore in the backfield and he could end up being the next great running back to win the Heisman. Both teams match up well against each other, but Georgia will need to find someone to cover Alshon Jeffrey and they need the defensive line to step up against Lattimore.
Georgia's offense has a lot to work with as well. True freshman running back Isiah Crowell has Georgia fans excited and fits the offensive scheme. Tonight could be his time to shine and announce his arrival into the college football world.
The game will be a good one, but South Carolina should win this one.

The South Carolina Gamecocks enter the 2011 season with a lot of hype around them. They bring back the best running back in the conference and one of the best in the country. They have the best wide receiver in the conference and they have the best recruit on campus.
Marcus Lattimore, Alshon Jeffrey and JaDaveon Clowney are all expected to have monster years and help South Carolina to an SEC Championship. That being said, can they do it? Those are just three names on a team full of question marks and the biggest question mark is the quarterback.
Stephan Garcia is not the answer and although he stepped in and won the game for South Carolina last week against East Carolina, that luck won't carry over in games against Alabama or LSU.
South Carolina is a very young team that has talent across the board, but is that talent enough to translate into an SEC Championship this year?
South Carolina will certainly compete in the SEC, but being championship caliber remains to be seen.

For all of the great teams in the SEC, South Carolina only has to play three teams that are currently ranked: Mississippi State, Arkansas and Florida and the Bulldogs and Hogs are both from the SEC West.
If the Gamecocks can get a win in either of those games and win the games they should for the rest of the season, South Carolina could easily make a return trip to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game.
There may not be a ceiling for this team led by the offensive trio of Stephen Garcia, Marcus Lattimore and Alshon Jeffrey and a talented defense with Devin Taylor, Stephon Gilmore and Jadeveon Clowney.
Winning on the road in the SEC is always challenging and there are a bunch of teams in the East that could surprise. Florida impressed in its opening game and Georgia showed signs of brilliance in their loss to Boise State. Even Tennessee looks like it could start to turn things around this season.
But the clear favorite in the division based on their schedule and talent has to be South Carolina.

The South Carolina Gamecocks enter the season ranked 12th in the AP Poll and have SEC Championship dreams as well as BCS bowl hopes. The defense is looking fantastic on paper and the offense has all the weapons to be very successful.
South Carolina just needs a quarterback they can count on.
The Gamecocks are more than likely going to start senior quarterback Stephen Garcia. He is the most experienced quarterback on the roster and has the numbers to back it up. Well, sort of.
In three seasons at South Carolina, Garcia has thrown for 6,753 yards and 43 touchdowns. At the same time he's managed to throw 32 interceptions. His first two seasons as a starter he's thrown double digit interceptions.
Now, Garcia has all the tools to become a better quarterback and help lead the Gamecocks to where they want to go but can he stay out of trouble?
Garcia has been suspended five times from the university, including being arrested a couple of times. He is a lose cannon and every few months seems to be in some type of incident.
Of course he provides South Carolina with the best chance of winning but is he worth all of the trouble? Say the Gamecocks are weeks away from the big game against Florida and he gets in trouble, again.
There goes the chemistry and possibly the season.

The hype is huge around Jadeveon Clowney—not with him just being the overall No. 1 prospect, but some people go as far as to call him the greatest prospect we've ever seen. He's a "can't miss," as some people refer to him as.
He is very athletic and has a ridiculous combination of speed and size. He has great explosion off the ball and long arms to disrupt passing lanes. He is one of those payers that doesn't have many weaknesses. He is a freak of nature.
In one season in high school, his stat sheet consisted of 162 tackles, 29.5 sacks, 29 tackles for loss, 11 forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries and scored five touchdowns on defense. He also scored nine touchdowns on 32 carries when he played running back.
You've got to be kidding me.
He finished high school with a 38-6 record and won almost every high school award imaginable, including "Mr. Football" in the state of South Carolina.
But with all that said he will never be able to meet all of the expectations. Not that he isn't good enough but that nothing he ever does will be.
There's a point when you hype something up so much it gets to that point. Jadeveon Clowny passed that a long time ago.

The number one prospect in the nation Jadeveon Clowney has missed the last couple of practices due to bone spurs in his ankle. He says fans shouldn't be alarmed he is fine.
“I felt good out there tonight,” Clowney said. “I'm ready for the season to start.”

It's a good thing to know he is okay and ready for the season to start because Gamecock fans expect big things from him.

South Carolina starting cornerback Akeem Auguste missed the preseason with an injured foot. He returned to practice and injured his foot again.
“He was doing well, then he twisted it and hurt his foot again,” defensive backs coach Lorenzo Ward said. “We'll see an evaluation in the morning. I don't know if he reinjured to the point it was at first, but he was doing well and then all of a sudden he made a cut on it and hurt it again.”
Senior cornerback C.C. Whitlock will start in place for Auguste on the opener Saturday against East Carolina.
“I'm 100 percent sure that C.C., will start,” Ward said. “I think C.C. Has done fine. I think he's gotten better in this camp. Even coach Spurrier admitted that he's getting better, but he's got to make plays when they're there.”
Let's hope Auguste can make a speedy recovery.

South Carolina landed the number one overall prospect in defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.

He is just one of the players that will make up not just the best defensive line in the SEC but one of the best lines in the country.
Other players that will have a huge impact on the line are, Devin Taylor, Travian Robertson, Aldrick Fordham, Kelcy Quarles and Melvin Ingram who led the Gamecocks in sacks last year.
Look out SEC quarterbacks, it's going to be a long year.

Stephen Garcia has all the potential to be a top quarterback in the SEC but he is very inconsistent. One game he'll throw for 235 yards and three touchdowns, the next he'll throw for 161 yards, one touchdown and one pick.
He threw for over 3,000 yards last year and 20 touchdowns but also managed to throw 14 interceptions. If the Gamecocks expect to make strides in the SEC, Garcia has to play much better.
He has great weapons around him including a top wide receiver in Alshon Jeffery and a 1,000 yard rusher and possible Heisman candidate in Marcus Lattimore.
Looking at Garcia's track record though, he is going to make mistakes. South Carolina fans just hope the mistakes don't cost them a trip to Atlanta.
