Alabama Football: Tide Squarely the Favorites in SEC West with LSU Suspensions
With the latest news coming out of Baton Rouge that Jordan Jefferson has been indefinitely suspended in addition to the indefinite suspension of receiver Rusell Shepard, Alabama is now the undisputed favorite in the SEC West.
Arkansas, Mississippi State and Auburn all hope to knock the Tide this season as do LSU but now every one of those teams have at least one glaring issue.
As of now, despite multiple suspensions, the Tigers are still in the best position to knock off Alabama because Jefferson was, to be frank, a very replaceable quarterback. With Jarrett Lee and Zach Mettenberger behind him, the biggest question is at wide receiver.
Reuben Randle is an elite talent who was the second best player in the country in 2009 according to Rivals. He and Shepard could be a threatening duo but unless Shepard returns at some point this season, defenses will be double covering him all game.
Randle may be talented but so are these SEC defensive backs, especially at Alabama.
With the game at Bryant-Denny, even if Shepard were to come back and the new quarterback emerge as elite, the fans would just refuse to let that happen.
And even though the Tide showed their vulnerability on the road at South Carolina, LSU and, to a certain extent, at Arkansas, this team is just better than Mississippi State and Auburn until proven otherwise.
Alabama was the favorite to win the division and the entire SEC and, as LSU’s team currently stands, have solidified that pick. Soon it will be time for them to prove it on the field.
