Steve Wallace Video: Watch Crew Chief's Bizarre Attack on Wallace in Montreal
One of those classic unwritten rules of NASCAR racing is: spin another driver out and you're going to get your hair pulled. Wait, that's not very NASCAR. I don't think that it's an unwritten rule at all.
Someone should tell this to crew chief Jerry Baxter. Steve Wallace was slowly driving towards his pits after the race. And Baxter walked up out of nowhere, reached into the car and gave Wallace's hair a good tug. To prove that it wasn't a mistake, he adjusted his grip to a more optimal position and tugged again.
This was a little bit shocking to Wallace. "I thought only girls pulled hair," Wallace replied in a post-race interview.
Wallace was surprised by the hair grab, but not at the fact that someone was out to get some retaliation.
Wallace made a huge boneheaded move earlier in the race. Let's go step-by-step through his decision process in his ill-fated move.
He tried to pass Patrick Carpentier. No problem there, right?
Well, he did it as the two entered the tightest hairpin turn on the track. That makes things a little dicier, but still not beyond the bounds of acceptability.
That's not all though. Carpentier was already in the process of passing the car in front of him. That meant Steve Wallace made it three-wide going into the tightest turn on the track. I think we can all agree that is a little much.
Still, I am left to wonder where in this process Baxter sat and thought to himself, "When Wallace comes back in here I am going to show that little punk. Should I punch him in the face? Nah, I'll just rip him out of his car by hair. That will show him not to mess with the manly beasts that make up this team."
