Burnley's Bridge Night Ruined

Didier Drogba is never far from the headlines and, sure enough, after a few quiet weeks on the sidelines the striker was back to his worst on Wednesday night.

Just moments after firing Chelsea ahead against Burnley with a goal stamped with class, Drogba was the target for some mindless Burnley associates who launched a series of "missiles" at the Ivory Coast frontman. But unlike Frank Lampard, who ignored the baiting, Drogba offered a one-fingered salute before launching the offending article back at the massed ranks of Clarets supporters.

It was a gesture that was punished by a yellow card, but is now being investigated by the police and Football Association and sure to rumble on for weeks.

Drogba has since apologised via the club's website for his actions, but at 30 years of age he should know better.

It's true if the objects had not been thrown then the unfortunate incident would have been avoided, but an experienced international footballer should have turned the other cheek.

It's also a blight on the perception of Burnley's fans, which many of them have been trying to repair, and which has been tarnished once again. And, more importantly for the Burnley players and manager Owen Coyle, they have had their big night at the Bridge overshadowed by a few idiots in the stands and one on the pitch.

Don't forget the Championship outfit actually won the match on penalties and go marching on to the Carling Cup quarterfinals, where they are football odds of 46.0 for them to go all the way.
