With two weeks still to run in the current transfer window, Sir Alex Ferguson has indicated his spending for the summer is over.

The additions of David De Gea, Phil Jones and Ashley Young have sated the manager's immediate desire to strengthen his squad and, even with a spate of early-season injuries to contend with, United appear well set for more success this campaign.

But United will always be linked with new players, considering the clout they carry in the transfer market. So who can we expect them to buy in January, once the window re-opens?

By then, there may still be a need to find a long-term successor to Paul Scholes, a creative midfielder who has the ability to unlock defences with a devastating pass while posing a threat to goal themselves.

Tom Cleverley has already given a good account of himself, indicating that he could be the one, but if he fails to build on his early promise, who will United look at in January to fill the void?

Here we take a look at four potential signings in the New Year (deliberately omitting Wesley Sneijder, who is now unlikely to leave Internazionale): Christian Eriksen, Mario Goetze, Yoann Gourcuff and Joey Barton.
