That so many of these players—now 20-25 homerun hitters—had more minor league power than Gomez means that he has a miniscule chance of developing into a power threat.  

However, Gomez does not necessarily need a power surge to be valuable to Minnesota.

Whether Gomez ultimately resembles Jose Reyes, Scott Podsednik or even Julio Lugo, he can still provide value to his team without being a 5-tool player. Just as long as the Twins know they’re not getting the second coming of Carlos Beltran.
