Lyoto Machida vs. Phil Davis in the Works

Lyoto Machida's manager has said that the contracts for a fight between Lyoto Machida and Phil Davis have been issued.

Phil Davis was set to fight Rashad Evans at UFC 133, but a knee injury forced Davis off the card.

Meanwhile, Machida has just come off a knockout victory over Randy Couture at UFC 129 and has been looking for an opponent since. He turned down the opportunity to fight Rashad Evans at UFC 133 because it was reported that he had asked for "Anderson Silva money." Consequently, negotiations between the UFC and Machida's camp broke down, and Tito Ortiz was the man to answer the call to fight Evans at UFC 133.

Now, it looks like Machida and Davis are set to fight each other at a later date.

"We had the first contacts and we may soon know more," Machida's manager told Yahoo Esportes. "[Davis] is the most concrete option in the division. He'd be a huge opponent for Lyoto, who's one of the biggest idols of the sport in Brazil and needs to fight again soon."

The winner of this fight could potentially have an opportunity to fight for the light-heavyweight championship, and when commenting on the fight, Machida stated that it would be a "... clash of styles."

"Davis is a wrestler, who keeps a strong rhythm on all the rounds until the end. I would need to adjust some aspects in my training to fight him, but this technical change always was one of my best characteristics. I won't have any problems."

Davis beat Machida's teammate and coach, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, at UFC Fight Night 24, so this could be a chance for Machida to avenge Nogueira's loss.

This light-heavyweight matchup promises to be an exciting fight between two of the best fighters and prospects in the division.
