WWE: Melina a Casualty of the Vicious Double Standards System
The world is a very cruel and unfair environment that is riddled with double standards, lies and hypocrites. Rumors spread faster than the weeds that grow in the cracks of every sidewalk we walk upon on a daily basis.
Within the wrestling world, fans are the perfect examples of leading the charge of double standards when it comes to their favorite wrestlers and Divas they cheer for relentlessly.
Fans moan and groan over the fact that WWE Divas do not get the respect they deserve, and they all yearn for the Divas to have more in-ring time. Of course, these same so-called fans make their routine bathroom breaks during Divas matches and routinely say they suck.
They wish for the Divas to have the same respect as their male counterparts, yet they have shown that they do not hold the Divas in that regard.
Which brings us to the case of Melina Perez. Despite tremendous skills between the ropes and an ability to cut a decent promo, she is bashed left and right by wrestling fans all over to the point where they disregard her achievements and speak ill of her to no end. The Morrison fans celebrated on the streets when the news broke that she was future endeavored.
In my mind, there really two versions of this so-called Morrison/Melina/Batista "controversy." One version is the truth where it's nothing more than a break-up leading to a fling, then ending in the original couples getting back together.
The other version is nothing more than a rumor that got twisted and pulled into a monstrosity that fans somehow transformed into true facts.
Here, I'll state both versions of the "controversy" and I'll start with the version that I believe is the undisputed factual version.
In 2006, Melina and John Morrison split up as a couple and for a while dated other individuals. Around that same time, Batista and his wife Angie both divorced. Batista and Melina developed a short-term relationship and in Batista's biography, he states that they only started dating after the divorce from his wife.
The relationship didn't last long thus Melina and Morrison worked out their differences and continued back to being a couple.
In this version, Melina and Morrison never broke up, but Morrison allowed or "loaned" Melina to Batista while Batista was still married to his wife (Pro Wrestling Torch, h/t Ringside News). Batista's marriage was ruined, and apparently this held Morrison back from his main event push. Everyone from that point on believed that as long as Morrison was with Melina, he would never taste WWE Championship gold.
The fact is various fans side with me on the true version while a good chunk of fans believe the adultery rumor. In between, some fans will have information from both versions mashed together while still painting the image of Melina being only a piece of tail.
Fans are so quick to jump into the act of accusing Melina of shameful acts when all that occurred was the normal dissolution of couples to her dating someone new for a while.
Let's say John Morrison was in Melina's position instead! Let's say he broke it off with Melina and at that time went and had a fling with Torrie Wilson. I bet many of you would not care and would think "Good for Morrison, and it’s Melina's loss."
Or how about if Melina allowed Morrison to "get with" Wilson while she was still married to Peter Gruner? Some of you would no doubt rush to defend Morrison, while others would be disappointed in him. I bet the majority of you would have forgiven him by now and simply say he made a mistake while not holding it against him.
Melina does not get that respect at all, as many of you still spread that rumor as if it was fact and hold it over her head as if she was a disgrace.
Even if she did hook up with Dave while he was married or dated him while still with Morrison, then she simply made a mistake, as she only human.
WrestleMania 27 saw Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, Trish Stratus and John Morrison defeat Dolph Ziggler and LayCool (Layla and Michelle McCool). According to Wrestling Observer (h/t Pro Wrestling Scoops), Melina has gone on the record stating that she should have been on the card instead of Trish Stratus. Morrison took the side of his girlfriend and gave Stratus the cold shoulder through their time working together.
Fans were simply enraged with Melina, as they believed she was forcing Morrison act in that way towards Stratus. They claim Melina has no place in that match and if any Diva had the right to be in Stratus' place, then it should be Kelly Kelly as she was rumored to be in the match beforehand.
The majority blamed Melina for why Morrison was not pushed after Mania.
I can understand the reasoning behind Kelly Kelly deserving the spot more, as it would have made more sense storyline-wise. I believe Melina simply made that statement because she was a Diva currently employed to the WWE while Stratus retired back in 2006.
Morrison cold-shouldering Stratus was his own choice, and he's an adult who decided to side with his girlfriend over being a professional, which places the blame on Morrison, not Melina.
Now even while future endeavored from the WWE, Melina still is subjected to the cruelty of double standards from the WWE Universe. She could not be in the back while at weekend house shows and was asked to be removed from the shows. In the past, former WWE workers were allowed to visit, but apparently Melina can't.
Some of you would no doubt have followed the logic that it's too soon for her to be visiting friends and former co-workers as she was only recently let go of. Yet, the WWE didn't have an issue with Chris Masters showing up in front of the SummerSlam AXXESS with a lackey filming every autograph signed and photo he had with the fans.
So Melina gets booted out of house shows while Masters is allowed to interact with fans? I don't know about you, but THAT is very hypocritical, WWE.
At the end of the day, double standards will remain. A man will be cheered for his sexual conquest with the opposite sex, while women will always be called nasty names for doing the same acts.
Melina will keep on living her life while proving that she is better than what the spineless fans call her. Hopefully, one day, Melina will get the respect that she deserves and is given another chance by the WWE!
