EPL Preview: Ranking the Favorites for the Golden Boot

1 of 12

Another season of the Premier League, the most popular football league, begins with the excitement of watching some of the best teams in the world in action.

The best teams feature some of the most lethal strikers in the world. There is a lot of expectation and weight on these strikers to bang in the goals for their clubs.

In this article, I'll be discussing the rankings for the Golden Boot, which will be based on my opinion and views.

10. Peter Odemwingie, West Brom

2 of 12

One of the best signings last season in the Premier League, Peter Odemwingie wowed and astonished many with his excellent contribution and goals that helped keep West Brom in the Premier League.

Odemwingie was one of the best performers last season and has been linked to a move to the Gunners this summer. Odemwingie scored 15 goals in 32 appearances, displaying his impressive debut season and his quality as a goal-scorer.

He's a player I believe should be kept an eye on, with his pace, excellent movement and great eye for goal.

9. Asamoah Gyan, Sunderland

3 of 12

Another inspired Premier League signing, Asamoah Gyan joined Sunderland from French side Rennes for around £15 million. Despite the heavy fee, Gyan turned out to be an excellent signing, not only wowing the fans with his dancing skills and celebrations but also with his dynamic approach and great eye for goal.

He scored 10 goals in 31 appearances for Sunderland last season, which is good for a debut season in the Premier League. I expect him to do even better this season, especially after being more settled than last season.

Gyan is a player who gives his all and is known for his superb pace, great movement and physical strength. He is an absolute nuisance to defences, so look out for him this season.

8. Darren Bent, Aston Villa

4 of 12

A player known for banging in the goals wherever he goes. Darren Bent angered Sunderland, including manager Steve Bruce, by moving to Aston Villa in a reported £24 million deal. Bent was a hit with Aston Villa, scoring nine goals in his 16 appearances with his club last season and proving his goal-scoring ability.

Known for being an incisive, pacy, powerful and clinical striker. Bent is a handful to any defence, with a decent scoring record of 82 Premier League goals in 188 matches.

I expect Bent to make another challenge for the Golden Boot. When he's at his best, especially confidence-wise, expect goals galore from the English international.

7. Didier Drogba, Chelsea

5 of 12

A top striker blessed with strength, power, pace, excellent movement and clinical finishing, Didier Drogba is one of the best strikers in the world and is still considered one of the most feared in the Premier League—even at the age of 33. Drogba has been a menace to Premier League defences ever since he joined Chelsea from Marseille in the summer of 2004.

Drogba has an excellent record of 95 Premier League goals in 203 Premier League appearances. Drogba has had trouble getting into the starting lineup ever since Fernando Torres joined, but I believe he will still make an impact and will show why he's one of the most feared players in the league.

6. Fernando Torres, Chelsea

6 of 12

One of the best strikers in world football, Fernando Torres had a barnstorming debut Premier League season a few seasons ago with Liverpool. The now Chelsea player has been having a rough time in front of goal ever since his big £50 million move to the club. High expectations and lots of pressure were placed on his shoulders, and so far he has scored one solitary goal with Chelsea in 15 Premier League appearances.

Despite this, I believe Torres will return to his best. He needs his confidence back, and he did well against Stoke, showing signs of returning to his former self.

When he's at his best, he's one of the most complete forwards you'll see. Blessed with excellent movement, pace, finishing, dribbling and also aerial ability, Torres' record of 66 goals in 117 Premier League appearances display what a quality player he is.

I believe he'll bounce back. When he does, he'll take the league by storm.

5. Robin Van Persie, Arsenal

7 of 12

A talented Dutch player, Robin Van Persie was recently named Arsenal's new captain. The gifted Dutch forward is one of the best strikers in the Premier League. He's known for his excellent technique, dribbling ability, shooting, superb left foot, pace and vision.

Van Persie, when injury free, is a world-class player who can threaten any defence in the league.

Van Persie scored 19 goals in 25 appearances last season, displaying his ability in front of the goal and his quality. If Van Persie can stay injury-free, then he's, without question, a definite contender for the Golden Boot this season.

4. Sergio Aguero, Manchester City

8 of 12

One of the most expensive signings of the summer, Sergio Aguero joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid for around £38 million. Aguero is considered one of the best forwards around today and is known for his dribbling, movement and great eye for goal.

He's a player who can decide a match for his team and has scored some spectacular goals in the past, including some against the best teams in the world like Barca and Chelsea.

Aguero scored 29 goals in 39 matches last season with a struggling Atletico Madrid, showing his goal-scoring credibility. He also showed it in his sensational debut last Monday against Swansea City, where he scored twice in the space of 20 minutes.

He's definitely a player to look out for this season.

3. Javier Hernandez, Manchester United

9 of 12

The surprise of last season, Mexican international Javier Hernandez was a sensation and probably the best transfer signing of the league. Hernandez had an excellent debut season in which he scored 13 goals in 27 appearances for Manchester United.

Hernandez is blessed with excellent positioning, movement, dribbling and finishing and is an absolute handful to any defence.

I expect Hernandez, especially after his excellent performances in the Gold Cup, to continue with his rise and to be even better this season. He has all the qualities to score plenty of goals with the club and to fight for the Golden Boot this season.

2. Luis Suarez, Liverpool

10 of 12

One of the biggest and best transfer signings of last season, Luis Suarez wowed the fans with his sensational performances, displaying his superb skill, technique, movement and creativity, especially against rivals Manchester United, where he roasted one of the best left backs in the world, Patrice Evra.

The Uruguayan international continued where left off with his excellent performances in the Copa America, as he was named the best player of the tournament and led Uruguay to the title.

I expect him to be even better than last season and show his goal-scoring prowess, as he scored just four goals in 13 matches last season. Suarez is more settled and has adapted to the style of the Premier League. I expect, if he continues with his form, to vie not only for the Golden Boot, but also for Player of the Year.

1. Wayne Rooney, Manchester United

11 of 12

In my opinion, the biggest challenger and favorite for the Golden Boot is Wayne Rooney. He is a superb striker, known for his skill, power, pace, movement, vision and hard-working nature, who works his socks off for the team. Rooney has scored over a 100 Premier League goals and he is only 26 and still has plenty to offer.

One of the most dangerous forwards in the world, he has had his problems last season but will be looking to pick up from where he left off at the end of last season.

Rooney is more settled now and with the controversies of last season behind him, he'll be more motivated to prove himself as one of the best in the world. Premier League teams must beware.

What Do You Think?

12 of 12

Of course, these rankings are debatable so what do you think? Who's the favorite for the Golden Boot?

There is another contender, if he ends up staying, and that is Manchester City's Carlos Tevez.

Please share your thoughts and opinions.

    Cheers,

    Omar
