Jim Harbaugh has hitched his wagon to the much-maligned quarterback Alex Smith. He is on record stating that he fully believes he can turn Smith into a decent NFL quarterback.

The 49er offense has looked very shaky in the first three series. Smith missed on his first attempt as he threw the ball into the feet of his receiver on a short pass over the middle. However, on the next four pass plays, Smith was under severe pressure.

The pass blocking, which was very suspect in 2010, has not given Smith the time to throw the ball.  He has been hit on three of four pass plays, resulting in one fumble and two other near fumbles.  The offensive line must play a lot better or Smith and the offense will have no chance in 2011.
