Javier Mascherano has been convinced to accept Diego Maradona's wish and become Argentina's new captain in a partnership that begins next Wednesday in a friendly against Scotland. The 24-year-old Liverpool midfielder was Maradona's first choice as skipper, and after initial hesitation took the job."I've convinced him," the 48-year-old Argentine legend told Argentinian press after returning from his six-day trip to Europe, during which he visited a number of his top players, including Manchester United's Carlos Tevez and Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

"I explained to him what I thought about him and told him what I thought he could give the team," the former Napoli and Barcelona star added. Maradona travelled to Liverpool to convince Mascherano after he suggested that he would turn down the offer.

Javier can encourage a lot inside the field, we do not ask him to be immediately the leader, his game will give it.

Mascherano will lead out his country at Hampden Park next week

“What I want is someone next to me who has lived limit moment to be able to transmit them to the rest of the players.”

Liverpool’s side is full of captains, ex-captains and stand-in captains of their national squads. Some names include Steven Gerrard, Yossi Benayoun, Robbie Keane and Lucas (Brazil U-21 captain).
