Wow.  I never would have thought I’d be saying this, but the Yankees really owe the Mets one. Big time. Really, they literally just saved our lives.

Don’t know what I’m talking about? I’m talking about Johan Santana.

It’s looking like the Mets are about to make him theirs, and, by doing so, they just saved the New York Yankees franchise.

Nothing good could have happened if the Mets didn’t make this trade.

Either the New York Yankees would eventually give in and mortgage away their future and blow up their payroll by giving in to the Twins or, even worse, the Red Sox would have gotten him.

It was a scary time to be a Yankee fan, it really was, but a miracle happened. Now, the best pitcher in baseball will no longer be our problem; he’ll be in the National League.

He’ll never bother us again, except perhaps in an inter-league game or possibly the World Series.

Anyway, long story short, our once bitter rival just saved our lives. And we owe them. Well, kinda. Think about it.

It wouldn't do either of mortgaging our future or blow up our payroll. Johan would sign an extension for big money going into the 2009 season. After this season, Bobby Abreu's contract comes off the books for for $16M, we lose Andy Pettitte's contract for $16M, we can buy out Jason Giambi's for $5M, Kyle Farnsworth's $5.5M contract comes off the books, we will lose Latroy Hawkins $3.5M, Mike Mussina's contract comes off after 2008 (about $12M, although some of his money is deferred), and we can finally buy out Carl Pavano for $2M, after his $11M comes off the books.

So, with all that money coming off the books for the Yankees, why couldn't we afford to throw another $20M at Johan Santana?

We would, most likely, resign Abreu and Farnsworth (if he does well, which he won't), but we will be dropping over $60M in the contracts I stated above.

As for what we would have mortgaged...Melky Cabrera and Philip Hughes. I don't want to see Hughes go, but for what the Mets gave to them, I feel we could have gave them Cabrera, Kennedy, and 2 prospects for Santana.
