Bantamweight champion Abner Mares (21-0-1, 13 KO) is undefeated and ready to take on IBF bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko (28-2, 22 KO) this Saturday on Showtime. The winner will be crowned the Showtime Bantamweight Tournament Champion.

Mares, 25, is considered by many to be one of the brightest young stars in boxing. The Mexican boxer made his debut in 2005 at the age of 19.

In this 2009 bout versus Carlos Fulgencio, Mares was able to knock his opponent out with a left hook to the body in Round 6.

Since that fight, Mares has gone on to defeat Vic Darchinyan and draw with Yonnhy Perez. Both fights were broadcast on Showtime. The Darchinyan bout was the semifinal bout in the tournament. Mares won a close split-decision over 12 rounds and won the IBF world championship title and WBC Silver title.

His opponent, Agbeko, defeated Perez by unanimous decision last October to advance in the tournament. He also holds a victory over Darchinyan.

The finals were scheduled to go down in April, but Agbeko was forced to pull out of the fight due to a last-minute illness just days before the fight. The bout will take place at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mares is currently ranked fourth in the division according to The Ring magazine. Those ranked in front of him include Nonito Donaire (26-1), Anselmo Moreno (31-1-1) and Agbeko.
