Brace for Anelka Sends 60-Year-Old Scolari Home Happy

Jordan FridayCorrespondent INovember 9, 2008

Nicolas Anelka came up trumps for Chelsea again in a wet and windy encounter at Ewood Park, sending Chelsea back to the top of the Premier League table in the process.

In a one-sided first half, Paul Robinson was the only player keeping Blackburn on level terms with Chelsea, making two good saves from Mikel and Anelka. However, Paul Robinson's best efforts could not stop Anelka's deflected effort passing him on the 40th minute, sending the away Chelsea following into raptures.

During the second half, Blackburn had a solid spell of pressure, Carlos Villenueva and Jason Roberts forcing Petr Cech into two good saves.

But then Anelka's 68th minute tap-in destroyed any hopes of Blackburn making a comeback, and Luiz Felipe Scolari knew that he had sent his side back to the top of the Premier League, on his 60th birthday as well.

Anelka also came close late on, but Robinson willingly got down low to save, to keep the scoreline at a respectable 2-0.

A gritty, determined performance from Blackburn Rovers always kept Chelsea on their toes and it was never smooth sailing for the London visitors.

Fulltime: Blackburn 0  Chelsea  2

Anelka 40, 68.
