With the rumor mill virtually silent about potential landing spots for running back Clinton Portis, fans are starting to think that the end might be near for the long-time member of the Washington Redskins.
If his career is indeed over, Portis finishes with nearly 12,000 total yards and 80 touchdowns during his nine seasons in the NFL.
Gregg Rosenthal of ProFootballTalk.com tweeted what everybody has been thinking:
Starting to wonder if Clinton Portis has played his last snap.
Portis started the offseason by saying he would have liked to play for the New York Giants or New Orleans Saints, two winning teams with good offensive lines.
Since then, the Giants have re-signed Ahmad Bradshaw to pair with Brandon Jacobs while the Saints drafted Mark Ingram, signed Darren Sproles and still have Pierre Thomas on the roster.
Portis has only played in 13 games over the past two seasons as the heavy workload from earlier in his career caught up to him. He could still be a serviceable backup, but would likely only return to play for a team with a chance to make noise in the playoffs.
That, or he could hang up the cleats to signal the end of a terrific career.
