Minnesota Twins: Span Activated from DL, Morneau Starts Baseball Activities

With the exception of the first series and a half of the season, the Minnesota Twins have been a hurting machine all year long. From Tsuyoshi Nishioka’s broken leg in New York to Jason Kubel’s ankle in Detroit, injuries have been a big part of the Twins season, but the team is now getting healthier.
After Sunday’s loss against the A’s, the Twins activated Denard Span from the DL. To make room for Span, Minnesota sent down Australian infielder Luke Hughes to AAA Rochester. Span has been on the DL since June 9th due to a concussion. The leadoff man was hitting .294 before he landed on the disabled list.
Not only is Denard Span coming back, but it looks like four-time all-star first baseman Justin Morneau may soon start a rehab assignment. The 2006 AL MVP has been on the DL since June 14 with a sore wrist and had surgery for a pinched nerve in his neck, but has recently started taking batting practice and doing baseball activities.
The Twins did not make any deals at the trade deadline, but have been slowly getting players back from injury. Tsuyoshi Nishioka, Joe Nathan, Jason Kubel, Delmon Young, and Jim Thome have all spent some time on the DL this season. The Twins currently have two players on the DL: Justin Morneau and Alexi Casilla.
Once the Twins are back at full strength, the race for the AL Central title may get even more crowded and definitely a little bit closer.
