Plaxico Burress: Where Does Braylon Edwards Go from Here?

Mick AkersJun 7, 2018

With the New York Jets signing former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress to a one-year deal early Sunday, Jets free-agent wideout Braylon Edwards' spotlight should heat up.

New York's signing of Burress leaves Edwards the top free-agent receiver on the market, and there a few teams with a real chance of landing the former Jet.

Here are the top four teams, according to Gary Myers of the New York Daily News, who have the best shot at picking up the talented receiver and which of the suitors is the best fit for Edwards.

1. Washington Redskins

1 of 4

Even though the Washington Redskins are wide receiver-heavy, don't count them out as a possible suitor for Braylon Edwards.

Already having signed Santana Moss and Donte' Stallworth to deals this offseason, plus already having Anthony Armstrong and Leonard Hankerson as potential starters, Edwards would bring a whole new dynamic to the 'Skins on offense.

With an inexperienced quarterback taking the helm in John Beck, adding another solid veteran alongside Moss would help Beck get in to the swing of things as a starting quarterback in the NFL.

We all know the Redskins aren't afraid to sign contracts that don't make sense, and as crazy as it would seem to add another wide receiver to a team that has 13 on its roster before training camp cuts, Edwards would be a nice addition to the Skins' offensive unit.

2. Tennessee Titans

2 of 4

The Tennessee Titans can use a big-time receiver to play opposite Kenny Britt and Nate Washington after their Randy Moss experience went sour last year, and Braylon Edwards fits the bill.

Britt was the Titans' leading receiver with 42 receptions for 775 yards and nine touchdowns last year. Washington added 42 receptions for 687 yards and six touchdowns.

Adding Edwards into the mix would add one more downfield threat, as Edwards accounted for 53 receptions for 904 yards and seven touchdowns last year.

If the Titans can somehow land Edwards, they could have one of the better receiving corps in the NFL and can help make newly-acquired quarterback Matt Hasslebeck's debut in Tennessee a successful one.

3. Chicago Bears

3 of 4

The Chicago Bears are another team in the hunt for Braylon Edwards, and Chicago wouldn't be a bad fit.

The Bears already have speedster Devin Hester in the backfield and added underperforming former Dallas Cowboys receiver Roy Williams to the team this free-agent period, so adding Edwards to the mix would give Jay Cutler a trio of wideouts to target downfield.

Like Hester, Edwards is a speedy receiver who can spread a defense out. Having two players of this caliber on an offense can cause opposing defenses headaches all season long.

The Bears are the second-best fit for Edwards, just for fact that having an established quarterback in place will be crucial to his success. And unlike the Titans and Redskins before them, the Bears possess that in Cutler.

4. Minnesota Vikings

4 of 4

The Minnesota Vikings have signed a quality quarterback in Donovan McNabb this offseason, but lost their top receiver, Sidney Rice, to the Seattle Seahawks in the process.

Adding Braylon Edwards alongside top returning receiver Percy Harvin and newly-acquired receiver Michael Jenkins, the Vikings can almost forget Rice is not around as their top down-the-field threat anymore.

McNabb has played with some of the best wide receivers in recent times, and playing with a wideout as talented as Edwards would be nothing new to the 12-year NFL veteran.

If any team could use Edwards to his full potential, the Vikings, with McNabb in charge, are the ones in my mind that have the best chance in doing so.
