Kansas City Chiefs Sign Kelly Gregg, Solve Their Problems at Nose Tackle
I guess the Chiefs have answered some of my questions.
The reports are in that Kansas City has landed Kelly Gregg, signing him to a one year deal.
I'm not really surprised by this move. After Todd Haley came out and said they'd focus on signing their own players instead of going and getting new ones, I fully expected them to look for a stop gap at nose tackle position.

It would seem that the front office likes what they see in sixth round pick Jerrell Powe, a massive nose tackle that scouting reports said should have been drafted in the third or fourth round.
It just so happens that not many teams other than KC really have a need at nose tackle. With the departure of veteran Ron Edwards, the need had become very significant.
However, I don't think this necessarily means that the Chiefs will just stop pursuing Aubrayo Franklin. Kelly Gregg is 35, and Franklin is 31. Defensive tackles tend to have long careers, but Gregg has clearly slowed down. Franklin could be the answer for the next several years, while Gregg only signed a one year deal.
Clearly, the front office must think that Powe was a steal in the draft and they'll be able to move forward with him at nose in the coming years.
The defensive end spot that was just occupied by Shaun Smith, a massive run stopper, has been vacated, and it's definitely possible that third rounder Allen Bailey could find starting time there. Mel Kiper, at one point, had him rated as a late first-rounder.
