New England Patriots: 4 Reasons Trading for Chad Ochocinco Will Help Brady Win
The New England Patriots have recently acquired Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco in exchange for two future draft picks, as it is another step in the right direction for this team.
With the addition of Ochocinco, the Patriots add a talent to the lineup that is a proven player in the league. He has put up solid numbers despite playing on an inconsistent offense with the Bengals.
Now with the Patriots, Ochocinco gets a chance to play behind arguably the best quarterback in the NFL in Tom Brady.
These are the five reasons why an Ochocinco-Brady tandem could prove to be a positive one in New England.
The Randy Moss Factor, Another Deep Threat
1 of 4Chad Ochocinco, much like Randy Moss, is a wide receiver that is always considered a deep-ball threat when he takes the field.
When Tom Brady had the option of hitting Moss down-field with 30-50 yard passes down the sideline, it opened up the Patriots running game as well as the area 10-15 yards down the field. It would allow for other receivers to get one-on-one coverage and get open more easily.
The first year with Moss, Brady was able to record a career-high 50 touchdowns while Moss grabbed 23 of his own touchdowns. Both records stood as the best in NFL history in one season.
Opens Up Wes Welker and Deion Branch
2 of 4With the addition of a player like Chad Ochocinco, it will likely give players like Deion Branch and Wes Welker more room to operate for down the field.
Welker and Branch were the two main wide receiving options for the team last season, as the two combined for 134 receptions and 1,554 yards. This doesn't take into account the fact that Branch played just 11 games with team last season, as he was acquired by the Pats after Week 4 of the regular season.
Over the last two seasons with the Patriots, Welker has recorded over 200 receptions. Now that Ochocinco has joined the team, Welker might just do more damage. It can be argued that he will get less receptions, as there is now another target, yet at the end of the day Brady has arguably the most trust in Welker.
Brady will not give Welker significantly less touches just because a receiver like Ochocinco joins the crew, trust in a receiver is something invaluable to a quarterback running an offense. If anyone knows that, it can be assumed Brady does.
The proof: the year Randy Moss had 23 touchdowns in 2007, Wes Welker lead the league with 112 receptions.
Improves the Run Game
3 of 4An improved receiving core inevitably is a step in the right direction to expand the running game as well, as the addition of Chad Ochocinco will give new light to running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis.
The New England Patriots need a running back like BenJarvus to have more room to operate, as this will give Brady more time to get rid of the football and ultimately make for a much more powerful offense.
This is not to say the Patriots feature a poor running game, as last season they were ninth in the league 123.3 yards per game. Green-Ellis lead the way with 1,008 yards and a solid 13 touchdowns. As Green-Ellis continues to improve and Ochocinco gradually opens up the field, the Patriots have the potential to be one of the top five best offenses in the league.
An Answer Against the New York Jets
4 of 4If the New York Jets are able to sign free agent Nnamdi Asomugha of the Oakland Raiders, this defense will hands-down be the best defense in the league. Signing a player like Chad Ochocinco is the type of move that has the potential to counteract that move.
After the Jets eliminated the Patriots in last year's postseason the Patriots had to make a move to improve the offense this offseason. Now with Ochocinco, Wes Welker, and Deion Branch lining up on either side of Tom Brady, the Patriots have the talent to compete with that tough, cold-blooded Rex Ryan defense.
With Cromartie, Darrelle Revis and possibly Asomugha, the Jets have as talented a secondary as any in the NFL. Adding skill players to the offense like an Ochocinco is essentially making a move to try to compete with the Jets for the top spot in the AFC.
