With Tough Loss at Utah; The Trailblazers Must Now Regroup
The loud buzz in Portland has softened slightly, perhaps to a dull hum. Regarded as one of the most anticipated seasons in recent Trailblazer history, the Blazers (1-3) have yet to display the kind of growth and improvement expected from last season.
Sure, the season just started. And yes, they've only played four games. I understand that. But after watching Portland collapse in the fourth quarter against the Jazz Wednesday night, I became frustrated.
A couple of disturbing trends have started to the bubble to the surface with the team so far . The Blazers must address these issues quickly before the horses in the Western Conference leave Portland back in the dust.
1. Lack of defensive pressure and intensity
Blown coverages, late or no rotations on the weak side and lack of ball pressure has created too many easy opportunities. Players are late getting back on defense. The numbers don't lie. The last three Blazer opponents have shot no worse than 53% from the field. Enough said.
2. No sense of urgency; lack of focus
I understand Portland is still a very young team. New faces are still adjusting to the speed of the NBA and learning to grasp the system implemented by Nate McMillan. Excuses aside, the leaders of this team need to step up. The team at times has last its poise, hoisting shots from the perimeter and becoming easily rattled. These are problems that occurred with last years team at this time which is unacceptable. This years team needs to step it up & work together to correct this.
There's no question that a healthy Portland team has the talent to be a legitimate threat in the Western Conference. There's no reason why this team hasn't been more competitive so far. Good thing is they will get a chance to redeem themselves after last nights loss. Next up? The Houston Rocket are in town (the second game of a back-to-back)
