Arsenal Transfer News: Why Cesc Fabregas Will Stay and Juan Mata Will Join

Chris SiddellJun 7, 2018

Cesc Fabregas is said to have demanded show down talks with Arsene Wenger when the Arsenal squad return from a preseason trip to Germany, as Juan Mata looks set to sign from Valencia.

But the talks are likely to be about how Fabregas can go about winning the title with Arsenal this year and end a run of six years without a trophy, with a move to Barcelona looking more and more unlikely.

Gael Clichy may have left for Manchester City, but with Sami Nasri now set to stay and the addition of Gervinho already confirmed, Captain Fabregas looks set to give Arsenal another chance.

Barcelona may well be the more likely to win trophies, and have already picked up one piece of silverware this year, the Audi Cup preseason tournament in Munich, but Fabregas is far from guaranteed a start at the Catalan club.

With Xavi and Iniesta still at the peak of their powers and a team built around Messi and David Villa, the only way Fabregas would make it into the team would be through injury.

In the longer term, Fabregas is still likely to move back to Spain, but as a replacement for 31-year-old Xavi, not as a teammate.

If anyone needed any further convincing that Wenger means business and is determined to bring success to the Emirates in 2011/12, then the pursuit of Juan Mata will remove all doubt.

The Valencia and Spain winger will provide a huge boost to Arsenal players and fans alike as Wenger makes his second big signing of the summer.

The Spanish media have said a deal is very close, and although there has been interest from Tottenham, the 23-year-old is likely to prefer a move to Arsenal over their North London rivals.

Bringing in Mata will cost in the region of £17 million and will see Wenger’s spending move up towards £30 million this summer, and the Frenchman has suddenly got what looks like a formidable attacking squad.

With Fabregas, Nasri, Van Persie, Gervinho, Walcott and Arshavin already at the Emirates, the addition of Mata will surely mean Arsenal will no longer need to rely on Bendtner and Chamakh for anything more than the League Cup and reserve games.

Emmanuel Eboue is on his way out as Wenger looks to clear out his squad of those players he feels can not contribute to a title winning team.  The Ivorian is set to bring in around £4 million as he heads to Turkish giants Galatasaray.

That money will not cover the new signings, but that no longer seems to worry Wenger as he breaks the bank in search of glory.

One area that still needs some attention is defence, and Wenger will look to bring in a new centre half, with Phil Jagielka still linked to the Gunners, along with Bolton’s Gary Cahill and Christopher Samba of Blackburn all likely targets for Wenger.

Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon may well be another target as the long serving Frenchman looks to find a more reliable stopper after Alumnia, Fabianski and Szczesny have all failed to hold down the No. 1 spot in recent seasons.

One thing is for certain, Arsenal are looking like a much more serious outfit this season, and after being close one several fronts last season before a four-week meltdown, the Gunners are certain to pose a much bigger challenge to the title contenders this season.
