EPL Transfer News: Sergio Aguero Signs for City, Debut Expected at Weekend
The long running speculation was ended today, as Sergio Aguero finally signed for Manchester City.
The Argentinean arrived in Manchester this morning to complete a medical, and after three hours in a local hospital, the 23-year-old striker emerged looking pleased.
Confirmation of the transfer was delayed as Aguero checked into a Manchester hotel before heading to the Etihad Stadium to agree personal terms and finalize the deal.
After the proposed move of Carlos Tevez fell through last week, the deal to bring in Aguero had been in some doubt. But City has pressed on to bring in the forward regardless, with the fee believed to be close to £40 million.
City, at least until Tevez leaves the club, now boast a frontline worth over £100 million, as the club continues to show its wealth in the transfer market.
It was clear Manchester City saw the agreement of personal terms as merely a formality, as they proceeded to announce the squad for their trip to Ireland for the Dublin Super Cup this weekend.
A strong squad for the inaugural tournament, that also features Inter and Celtic as well as an all star Irish League team, was published on the club website.
The list of forwards, which is missing Tevez, who will not return to the club until next week, includes the cryptic "plus one other" at the end of the list.
It is widely believed that Aguero will complete his signing and then join straight up with his new teammates at the weekend to take part in the showcase tournament in the new Aviva Stadium.
Edwin Dzeko has shown that it is not always easy for a new forward to settle into a new team straight away. It is with this in mind that manager Mancini will be keen to get Aguero into the team in Dublin and playing with his new team-mates as soon as possible.
Aguero is seen as a replacement for fellow Argentine Tevez, who continues to search for a new club after problems with bank guarantees caused his move to Corinthians break down.
The signing of Aguero, who is four years younger than compatriot Tevez, has excited City fans who responded to a club tweet and arrived at the Etihad Stadium to greet their new forward as he arrived to finalize the transfer.
Ticket sales and viewing figures of this weekends pre-season tournament will no doubt be boosted by today’s news as City look to go one step further this season and challenge for the title.
