Amir Khan and 10 Best 1-Loss Boxers in the Sport Today

First LastJun 7, 2018

It's said that one loss on your record can destroy a successful career in boxing.

Well, these 10 boxers prove otherwise that a loss doesn't hurt and that it can sometimes be a good thing.

Many boxers received the first loss of their career this year, taking a tremendous amount of pressure off their backs as being an undefeated boxer. Now, they can concentrate on not making the same mistakes again.

These are the top 10 boxers who currently have one loss on their record.

Notable Mentions

1 of 11

Alfredo Angulo (19-1)

Alexander Dimitrenko (31-1)

Daniel Geale (21-1)

Devon Alexander (22-1)

Adrian Hernandez (21-1)

Andre Dirrell (19-1)

Andre Berto (27-1)

No. 10: Erislandy Lara (15-1-1)

2 of 11

While Erislandy Lara may not be the most skilled boxer on the list, he should still be undefeated. He is one of the few boxers on this list whose loss wasn't a legitimate one.

The loss: Lara dropped a majority-decision to Paul Williams in a 2011 bout that had many fans furious after the decision was announced. It was so bad, the three judges who scored the bout were actually suspended indefinitely.

As of now, Lara will be most remembered for his loss than any of his wins.

No. 9: Marco Huck (33-1)

3 of 11

The loss: Marco Huck's single defeat came at the hands of top cruiserweight boxer Steve Cunningham in 2007.

He was knocked out in the final round and was leading on one judge's scorecard at the time of the stoppage. It was his first major title shot.

Since that loss, he has picked up 14 straight victories and has defended the WBO cruiserweight title seven times.

His most recent victory came on July 16 when he beat Hugo Garay.

No. 8: Tomasz Adamek (44-1)

4 of 11

The loss: Tomasz Adamek was set to defend his WBC light-heavyweight title against an undefeated prospect named Chad Dawson early in 2007.

Despite knocking down his opponent late in the bout, Adamek was thoroughly beaten over 12 rounds and lost a unanimous decision.

After the loss, Adamek moved into the cruiserweight division where he won the IBF title after defeating Steve Cunningham. He eventually moved to heavyweight where he has six victories.

He will be fighting Vitali Klitschko for his WBC heavyweight championship in September.

No. 7: Chad Dawson (30-1)

5 of 11

The loss: Chad Dawson went into the most anticipated fight of his career versus Jean Pascal and put on the worst performance of his career

. Dawson fought tentatively for 10 rounds before losing a technical decision in Round 11 after suffering a cut from a headbutt. Many blamed his lack of killer instinct for his loss.

He recently rebounded from the 2010 loss to defeat Adrian Diaconu to set up a fight with him and Bernard Hopkins, who defeated Pascal to become the oldest boxer to win a major world title.

The fight will go down in October on HBO pay-per-view.

No. 6: Robert Guerrero (29-1-1)

6 of 11

The loss: Robert Guerrero lost a closely contested split-decision in 2005 to Gamaliel Diaz.

Guerrero and Diaz had a rematch the following year where Guerrero won by knockout in Round 6.

A 2006 loss to Orlando Salido was overturned into a no-contest after Salido tested positive for steroids after the bout.

He has since become the WBO and WBA lightweight champion and defeated notable boxers Michael Katsidis, Joel Casamayor, Vicente Escobedo and Jason Litzau.

Guerrero's next challenge will come in the form of hard-punching Marcos Maidana in August.

No. 5: Juan Manuel Lopez (30-1)

7 of 11

The loss: In a tough 2011 bout against Orlando Salido, Guerrero suffered the only loss of his career when he was knocked out in Round 8.

Lopez was knocked down early and had taken a lot of punishment before the referee jumped in to save him from taking more. Even though he was still on his feet and firing back, the stoppage was well-warranted.

Lopez hasn't fought since his loss, and it will be interested to see how he comes back from it.

There are talks of a rematch with Salido, but it may not be the best choice for him to come back to as it was his first loss.

No. 4: Amir Khan (26-1)

8 of 11

The loss: Amir Khan suffered a devastating first-round knockout to Breidis Prescott in 2008.

He didn't even make it out of the first minute of the round and was knocked down twice before the referee stopped the bout. Questions about Khan's chin quickly became the focus point of the former Olympian's career.

It hasn't even been three years since his first loss, but he has accomplished enough to make it almost inconclusive as to how much it has affected his career. Looking back on it, it has helped him in more ways than one.

He has won eight straight bouts, including a WBA world light welterweight championship bout versus Andriy Kotelnik.

He has defended the belt five times with wins over Marcos Maidana, Zab Judah and Paulie Malignaggi.

No. 3: Giovani Segura (28-1-1)

9 of 11

The loss: A 2008 bout looked to be easy work for Giovani Segura when he took on Cesar Canchila for the interim WBA light flyweight title.

Shortly in Round 2, a confident Segura dropped Canchila and appeared to be on his way to a win to extend his undefeated record. Canchila fought back and put on a competitive fight while busting up Segura's face a little bit to win a unanimous decision over 12 rounds.

Segura is now ranked among the top 10 pound-for-pound boxers and has two victories over Ivan Calderon to prove it. He also avenged his loss to Canchila with a TKO in four rounds.

He is currently the WBO light flyweight champion and considered the hardest puncher in the division.

No. 2: Carl Froch (28-1)

10 of 11

The loss: Carl Froch suffered the first defeat of his professional career when he took on Mikkel Kessler in his hometown in Denmark.

The competitive and exciting 12-round bout went to the scorecards where Kessler was awarded a unanimous decision by some surprisingly large margins. Some had Froch winning the fight while others saw it closer to a draw. It could have went either way.

Now, he is the reigning WBC super-middleweight champion has made it to the finals of the Super Six tournament where he is set to face Andre Ward on October 29.

He picked up two wins since the loss to Kessler, defeating Glen Johnson and Arthur Abraham.

No. 1: Nonito Donaire (26-1)

11 of 11

The loss: In only his second fight as a professional, Nonito Donaire lost a five-round decision to Rosendo Sanchez.

The bout took place in 2001 and was contested in the super flyweight division.

The loss is almost meaningless to take into consideration 10 years later. Donaire has become one of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world and is the WBC and WBO bantamweight champion.

He has obtained victories over Vic Darchinyan, Fernando Montiel, Hernan Marquez and many other top bantamweights and has won 24 fights in a row.
