NFL Free Agents 2011: Finding Destinations for Derrick Mason and Co.

Jason HenryJun 7, 2018

Amidst the busy NFL offseason, many veterans were cut or are slated for release in the coming days. Veteran wide receiver Derrick Mason was let go by the Baltimore Ravens along with Matt Hasselbeck being allowed to walk in Seattle.

Where will these big name players end up? Let's take a look at possible destinations for Derrick Mason and two other NFL veterans.

Derrick Mason, WR: Before it's all said and done with Mason this offseason, he may end up retiring and un-retiring again. I think that Mason still has something left in the tank and can contribute to more than a few squads.

-Baltimore Ravens:  Mason was schedule to make $3.5 million this season and may re-sign with the Ravens for less money.

-New York Giants: The Giants have issues at receiver as Steve Smith’s knee injury isn’t healing as fast as the team wants.

Marion Barber, RB: Barber knew that his time in Dallas was over and if he didn’t he was in a serious amount of denial. Barber still has a little bit left in the tank and while he’s no longer a starter he can still contribute.

He’s a bruising type of runner and there are a number of teams who could use his services.

-New England Patriots: Here’s why I say New England—Barber is a savvy veteran who may have a career revitalization as a Patriot. He won’t start but being a backup in Belichick system could do wonders for his career.

-Washington Redskins: As of right now the starter in DC is Ryan Torain who rushed for 742 yards last season. He’s a young guy who may turn out to be a pretty good back with more experience. Adding Barber may keep Torain’s legs fresh and bring needed veteran leadership to the ‘Skins.

Nick Barnett, LB: Nick Barnett announced his own release via Twitter, saying that his time in Green Bay has come to an end. Barnett missed a large chunk of last season due to a wrist injury but that shouldn’t stop teams from trying to sign him.

-San Diego Chargers: As of right now the Chargers employ Shaun Phillips, Kevin Barnett, Antwan Applewhite and Brandon Siler as starting linebackers. Applewhite is projected to lose his starting job if the Chargers are able to find a better option. Enter Nick Barnett.

-Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Bucs are in danger of losing stud linebacker Barrett Ruud and if they do, adding Barnett would be a great replacement.
