NFL: Where Will This Year's Top Free Agents Land?
Based on team needs, projected player salaries and Yahoo Sports' Jason Cole's top free agents list, (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=jc-cole_2011_nfl_free_agents_tracker_072511) I will predict where some of the top free agents of this year's offseason will end up. Keep in mind that predicting free agents is not an exact science, kind of like predicting a draft. Without further ado, let's begin.
Nnamdi Asomugha
1 of 17Based on team need alone I'd say that the Houston Texans are a likely landing spot for Nnamdi, however, I think the favorite team to land his services should be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They have a need at corner with their No. 2 corner Ronde Barber being 37 years young. And who knows if Aqib Talib can stay out of jail long enough to be productive? They have all the cap space in the world and should make a big run at Nnamdi.
Antonio Cromartie
2 of 17Where does one begin when talking about Antonio Cromartie? He's a very good corner who has the speed to match up with receivers. The only thing he's better at than football is making babies. He's a good, not great, corner who someone will overpay for and I think it'll be the Houston Texans. After losing out on Nnamdi they'll need a good corner and a big name to appease their fans, and Cromartie is the biggest name left.
Jonathan Joseph
3 of 17The team that I pick here may come as a bit of a surprise because of how many important players on their roster are free agents, but I pick the Jets to land Joseph. After losing Cromartie Rex Ryan realizes that he needs a good corner to handle all the balls coming his way opposite of Revis and their GM agrees. They go out and sign one of the most underrated corners in all of football.
Sidney Rice
4 of 17When healthy Rice is one of the best deep threats in the league. I'm going to pick the Rams to land Rice because a young star QB like Bradford could use a legitimate No.1 guy to go to and grow up with. The GM knows it, the coaches know it, heck even I know it. There's only one thing to do in this situation and the Rams are going to go out and get the best deep threat on the market.
Santonio Holmes
5 of 17Holmes is the first player I have staying with his current team, the Jets. I think the Redskins are going to throw a ton of money at him, but I think the Jets' offer will be close enough to the point where he'd accept a little bit less to go to a situation with a better QB, a team built to win now and in the future and to stay with Rex Ryan, a player's coach.
Braylon Edwards
6 of 17Braylon Edwards has all the physical tools to be an elite wide receiver in the NFL, except for one thing. He has trouble catching the ball. He's fast, big, agile, a good route runner and has good breakaway speed; he just has the dropsies. He's an electric playmaker and looks like he might've cured his butterfingers last year with the Jets. I think after losing out on Holmes the Redskins nab Edwards and give whoever they start at QB a good option to go to as a No.1 with Santana Moss as the No.2, a very respectable receiving corps.
DeAngelo Williams
7 of 17When healthy Williams is one of the top backs in the NFL. He's fast, elusive and a good runner between the tackles. He has everything you want in a feature back except health. I think his former coach John Fox will grab him and have him work in tandem with Knowshon Moreno on the Denver Broncos.
Zach Miller
8 of 17I think Miller is the guy who stays with the Raiders. They're an up-and-coming team (wow did I just say that?) and Miller is a big piece. They also have a lot of cap room with Nnamdi leaving and need to spend it somehow.
Steve Smith
9 of 17A top flight receiver who fell so low on the list because of injury concern. Microfracture surgery is a big deal and a huge red flag. I think he stays with the Giants because they need him, the fans would riot if they lost him and he won't get great offers anywhere else. He'll probably sign a short deal to re-up for next time around in free agency.
Ike Taylor
10 of 17Ike Taylor, although old, is a good corner whose skills and experience make him a good fit in any system. I think he stays with the Steelers. After they miss out on the three possible upgrades they take Taylor to make sure they have the same dominant defense as last year.
Charles Johnson
11 of 17Johnson had a breakout year when he was playing for his new contract. He did it without Julius Peppers on the other side, so I guess that means something. I think he's played himself into a nice payday with the Denver Broncos. They ignored their need for D-Line help in the draft and here's a great chance to improve their pass rush. Johnson and Von Miller could be a great duo for years to come.
Matt Hasselbeck
12 of 17He's staying put. No question. The Seahawks won the division last year and didn't add a young QB in the draft. He's their guy. Nothing else to say about that one.
Ray Edwards
13 of 17A good, young defensive end. Could be a huge guy on a rebuilding young team like Cleveland. They need D-Line help and I think they've got to be the favorites to land him.
Paul Posluszny
14 of 17I have no idea how to pronounce his last name, but the guy is a tackle machine. I think he leaves the Bills and goes to a winner. He'd be a good fit on a team like the Giants. They need linebacker help and Herzlich isn't experienced enough to cut it yet. The Giants are a good team and he's a good player in their area of need. The Giants would be fools to let him go somewhere else.
Ahmad Bradshaw
15 of 17He's going to stay on the Giants, no ifs, ands or buts. They can't afford to let him get away, Jacobs isn't the same back he used to be. He's a good fit there and if he wants to win, he'll stay in New York (Jersey).
Randy Moss
16 of 17Moss can be an elite deep threat or the best bench warmer in the NFL. It's one or the other. I think the best fit for him is the Colts. He came in and did his thing on the Patriots because Brady was the unquestioned leader. The Colts have Manning and Manning makes the receivers around him better. A better Randy Moss is pretty scary. Manning could use the deep threat and Clark and Collie are both injury concerns. It's just a great fit.
Adam Vinatieri
17 of 17I see Vinatieri going to the Jets. He's a great clutch kicker and the Jets situation with Folk isn't very good. Vinatieri is probably still playing to get another ring and he's got a great shot at one with the Jets.
Let's see how many of these I get right, does anyone else agree/disagree or want to add any? I'd love to hear your comments and feedback.
