Manchester United Transfer News: Sir Alex Takes Risk Not Signing New Centre Mid
The search for Paul Scholes' replacement is over, at least in the sense that Sir Alex Ferguson isn't planning on spending more money to make it happen, and the Red Devils are set to make due with what they already have.
According to a report from Mirror Football, the long-time United boss is not currently "in the market for new summer signings."
This is big news, especially considering that the Red Devils have been linked to players the likes of Wesley Sneijder of Inter, Samir Nasri of Arsenal and Luka Modric of Tottenham.
Nasri was never expected to be sold to United, although for the right amount they may have made it happen, but if he is going anywhere it would be Manchester City. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is adamant on keeping him though and is even willing to take a chance on losing him for free at year's end.
As for Modric, he heavily favors a move to Stamford Bridge, but Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has rejected that move three times already.
And finally, Wesley Sneijder, who has waffled more than a few times on whether he wants to stay in Italy or favors a move away, apparently has too high a valuation for Ferguson to sanction a deal.
This leaves us staring into the best locker room in all of England wondering who is going to step up and be the man for United in the middle.
Most of that opportunity will fall squarely on Anderson, the 23-year-old Brazilian who has made 73 league appearances for the Manchester side since 2007.
But Ferguson also isn't limiting it to just Anderson and is willing to try a combination of players to get the best results.
Darren Fletcher, however, is recovering from illness while Darron Gibson is on the transfer list.
But United also landed winger Ashley Young this summer to add to a group of wingers that includes Nani, Park Ji-Sung and Antonio Valencia. That means United's remaining midfielders include lifer Ryan Giggs, 29-year-old Michael Carrick and the aforementioned Anderson.
There is no denying that Sneijder would have been a most intriguing player in Sir Alex's formation, but if the price doesn't match, and Ferguson isn't willing to sign of on it, the United faithful have no choice but to believe him here.
This club has a ton of talent and a lot going for them with their latest moves, but they are also the prey in a very hungry English table.
Not moving for a Scholes replacement is a bit of a risk, but Ferguson is hoping to hide any drop off in talent with a number of other superstars surrounding the position.
