Manchester United Transfer News: New Centre Midfielder Will Make or Break Season
Manchester United finished at the top of the English table last year only to lose to Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League.
The disparity between the two teams was easily visible, and judging by how much money the Red Devils spent this summer, they knew it too.
A new goalkeeper, David de Gea, is the present and future for the club at only 20 years old.
Defender Phil Jones is only 19 years and looks like the real deal.
And Ashley Young, the 25-year-old English winger, plays with incredible pace and will bring another dimension to the United attack.
But in the middle of all of this, there is a gaping hole left by the legendary Paul Scholes that the Red Devils have yet to fill it.
They have searched and made a few offers, but they have yet to land the man they need in the middle.
Wesley Sneijder of Inter Milan has long been rumored as the top target, and while it looked for a while that the deal was on its way to being completed, those talks have cooled.
There is no denying that Sneijder would be a great fit, but he's not the only player they could fill the position with.
Luka Modric, who Tottenham claim is not for sale, has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for weeks now. Spurs are fighting tooth and nail to keep him, and while it doesn't seem likely that Modric has any intention of going to Old Trafford or that Spurs would even sell him to Manchester, he's still a name worth mentioning.
Diego Ribas Da Cunha is an interesting option, but I am not sure he'd fit in the club as well as other available stars.
Another unlikely option is Samir Nasri of Arsenal. There is little chance the North London club would even consider sending the Frenchman to their rivals at Manchester, but he's adamant on moving away from the Emirates.
Santos' Ganso is also an option, but he would prefer a move to Italy if were to go anywhere.
So what exactly does this mean for Sir Alex Ferguson's club at Old Trafford? It means they can't miss the mark on who they want.
If Sneijder is their man, they need to keep on it. If not, they need to find someone else to fill the void.
This club has talent all over the field, literally everywhere, but landing the right replacement in the middle will make or break how far they go in the campaign.
As talented as they are, landing a Sneijder-caliber superstar would put them in reach of chasing the Catalan giants that left them in the dust a year ago.
If they miss, they might not be able to hold off Chelsea or Manchester City in England.
