Chelsea Transfer News: Didier Drogba Not Leaving Stamford Bridge Without a Fight

Wes ODonnellJul 23, 2011

Didier Drogba has scored 144 goals wearing a blue jersey and he's not ready to call it quits just yet.

Since coming over from Marseille in 2004, he has been an absolute beast for Chelsea when healthy and has scored double-digit goals in every season at Stamford Bridge, including two 30-plus years.

But Drogba is now 33 years old, entering the last year of his contract and is considered a second choice behind Fernando Torres.

While it would be appear that Drogba would be best suited to consider a move to another club, he's not ready to move on just yet. According to Mirror Football Drogba said:

"

I will definitely be here next season. I said a few years ago that I will be here until the end of my contract and I am here. I want to finish my career at Chelsea. Of course [he would like to extend his contract], why not?

We've started talking and it's very interesting. Everybody knows what I feel about Chelsea and what I want. I'm 33, I'm the oldest player and it feels strange, but I'm not worried. If I deserve to play, I will play. If I'm not good, I won't.'

"

Drogba has already established himself as a legend in West London, but owner Roman Abramovich is determined to get the best of Spanish striker Fernando Torres playing for his side.

New boss Andre Villas-Boas' favored system, 4-3-3, is going to leave either Drogba or Torres on the bench, and unfortunately for Drogba, Torres has the advantage at the moment simply because of the owner's desire.

Torres looked terrible in his move over last season, scored only one goal in 18 appearances and the Blues were ultimately bailed out by Drogba when they needed it most.

Ultimately, Drogba is a competitor and is welcoming the opportunity to fight for his job. The Blues would be wise to keep him around if the loss to Manchester United in the Champions League quarterfinal was any indication and there is no telling if Torres will return to form.

This new campaign will be the ultimate test for Torres and if he isn't careful we will see Drogba starring as the main threat for the Blues before long.
